gas troubles

No matter what i do to get the range number to go up it just wont go past 297mi. I have a 03 Spt Ed. V8 and i used to get about 14.1 mi/g. I started driving a little more legal..haha and now i got it up to 15.3 but the range wont change with it. I still put the same amount of gas each time i fill it up, but correct me if im wrong but shouldnt the range go up with the miles per gallon? thoughts?

If you haven't reset it, then it will take time to adjust. Not sure how far back the history goes inside the computer, but it remembers for a while.
 
I do not think you are able to reset the range. I tried resetting it on numerous ocassions but it would not reset. I think mine goes as far as 320 miles.

You can't reset the range, but it seems to calculate from the mileage. So if you reset the mileage, it should reset the underlying calculations for the range.

By the way, my V6 routinely shows around 400 miles for a full tank. It fluctuates a bit up if I've been doing lots of highway driving, a bit down if doing lots of city driving.
 
Best I can recall seeing on mine is 422 miles at the end of an all-highway trip of almost 1,500 miles.

By the way, that trip also showed that range is low, because at the 22.4 mpg I measured (miles on the trip odometer divided by gallons used), the 23.0 gallon tank has a range of up to 515 miles. Of course, I never want to take it close to that -- I usually fill up after about 300 miles on a tank.
 
I just filled up, reset the MPG, AVG speed, and trip odometers. As soon as I moved forward a few feet it started at 342 and that number is about what I've been seeing.

On a side note, I had the battery disconnected yesterday while I did some work (see my other recent posts) on the truck. When I gased up today I realized that the trip computers had been reset as well as the MPG and AVG tallies. I guess the truck doesn't have memory for those things like it does for the odometer.
 
Haha, I was going to report the temperature, time of day, pump location, the way my hair was combed, ..... ;):
 
Range / MPG

Range is about 386. Indicated MPG on the last 2 tanks was
18.4 & 18.1. Doing the math took that down to a more believeable 16.5. Hair was frizzed :rocker: during the 2nd tank, accounting for the lower MPG.

I'm still driving veeery gently with this new truck.

V6 + 91 oct. is about 20-22

Hi!

I have noticed that if I burn either Chevron, Shell or Texico 91 oct., I can get about 20-22. I get about 350-390 city/hwy.

Going up to Tahoe, at a bit above the posted speed limit, we were pulling 25 MPG. That was with a loaded rig. On our return trip, we were getting 28 MPG!!! Whoa! Yeah, it was down hill, but man, it was gr8!

I have seen a few folks posting's that have stated that they don't think the higher oct. actually makes any difference. I honestly disagree. Arco & Costco gas burns through my 4Runner like water.

I drove a V8 while my POS was in the shop on one of it's MANY repair trips. I must admit that the low-end in the V8 is SO much better then our V6. But I do dig the slightly better gas miledge in our V6. :)
 
My 03' v8 usuallys shows 365-378, as high as 385 at one time. I have noticed that after the pump automatically shuts off when the tank is full; I can put up to 2 gallons more gas in the tank. I think this helps the range. When I tow my boat a lot it stays in the 340-350 range.
Another note, the range got down to 11 miles one time and I put 23+ gallons in the tank. I don't think I would have made it another 11 miles!
 
My V6 normally reports between 410-430 for the ranger although most of the time I do not get that much before filling up. Coincidentally I had the best MPG ever the other day on a 35 mile trip back to my house. I decided to see what kind of mileage I could get and drove much less aggressive than normal. I even had to stop at about 10 traffic lights and this is what I got. I apologize it was taken with a camera phone while driving....I think I was shaving and reading a paper too but I can't remember.

I just realized that I cannot add a picture at least I dont know how...... my trip computer showed 30.7 which is about 28.5 or so with "the error"

I thought it was great when my average got up to 18.9 mpg until I read the last couple of posts. This was when I was driving straight down the Turnpike. I average 14 mpg for street driving. For all of you who are getting more than 25 mpg, is yours in 4WD all of the time? I have the V8 and fulltime 4WD, so I assume I would not get the 25 mpg.
 
V8 mpg.

I get 14-16 mpg driving around town and on the freeway to work (smooth flowing freeway driving). If I can drive on the freeway in smooth flowing traffic and at 55 mph instead of 70 mph then I can get as good as 18 mpg. As always, the MPG Display on the panel shows about 2 mpg better than what I am actually getting.

Not on mine. When pumps shuts off, it will hardly take another drop. Maybe it's a difference between pumps.

My actual mpg is around 10-14 in town and 20+ on the highway. Combined trips (mixture of driving) tend to balance out around 17-18 mpg. I even did just a hair over 18 on a ski trip and back. My impression after just under 1000 miles is that the highway mileage is just ok. The in-town mileage is woeful.

For the most part, I knew this before I purchased. I had planned to get the V6 all along. Thriftiness usually prevails in most of my decisions. I probably will never tow much and the v8 and v6 had about equal 'pep' in my test drives. But the roar of the v8 and nice low-end torque put a grin on my face and I just couldn't get myself to scale back to the v6.

V6 - vroooooom, V8 - VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
