G'day from Down Under!
haven’t post here before, but were reading here and then in the last year for some advices etc. thanks to the community to keep knowledge around our trucks and how to fix them etc. online alive.
now it happened, that I need a bit more help. Only Google and forum search wasn’t successful
but before I start probably a new thread with my major problem, I wanna introduce myself:
who is driving: 27yr young backpacker from Germany.
what I drive?: 2nd gen. 4Runner from 1994 with the 3VZE/ V6 petrol engine, manual, currently 319k km on odometer. Engine runs little rough when warmed up since I drive it. But it’s a old car and its driving, so I never was really concerned about.
where I drive?: around Australia
mechanical knowledge: beginner (started to learn more about how cars are really working since I bought this, my first car in March 2012. Learning by doing; being an engineer helps for understanding).
What kind of "car tuning" I did:
- getting rid of the backseats > building a bed in instead
- growing grass graffiti
- tinting windows
- getting rid of all old speakers and radio, building in Pioneer Radio, Fusion Speakers in Front Door with extra Tweeter, DLS Speakers in the back supported by DLS Converter to support level low frequencies (no space, money and need in subwoofer with amplifier)...
What mechanical stuff happened to my car since I drive it (304k km):
307k km:
- broken injector sealant fixed (by mechanics)
- oil change at 307k km (15W-40), new brake pads at front , general service (by mechanics)
311k km:
- new timing belt within the whole kit (by mechanics)
314k km:
- new wheel bearings at front (by mechanics)
318k km:
- new radiator (by myself)
319k km:
- new idler arm + tie rod end inner and outer parts on both sides (by myself with mechanical support)
- wheel alignment (by mechanics)
- oil change (15W-40 + Lucas Oil Stabilizer) (by myself)
- new spark plugs (by myself)
Next (best, again by myself with mechanical support):
- Rocket Cover Gaskets, as it seems to be the major oil leak
- wanna try to fix knocking with valve adjustment
(as the Lucas Oil Stabilizer didn’t work out - seems, it made it even worse?! why??)
- have a specific additional engine sound while accelerating but only in higher rpms - last mechanic assumed with saying to be pretty sure about it, it’s a leak in the exhaust system at engine
Next, my car “problem” history to know my car a bit better and to avoid repeat all that stuff in future threads:
From beginning on the ‘check engine’ indicator shows up. But at beginning only here and then and regularly shut off some-when during drive. Since a while it shows up permanent after few minutes engine running (with becoming warmer??) Wasn’t concerned so far, because driving works ok. Anyway I checked at workshop with OBD scanner at a time where the light wasn’t showing up permanently. Two errors came up. One knocking sensor, but the mechanic couldn’t here it, and its even no minor problem then. Second, throttle body sensor. As don’t realize problems with engine, mechanics opinion was maybe just the sensor is going wrong as it is a moving part. I checked few weeks ago again, only knocking sensor came up again. Nothing about the throttle body. Now it even turns out, after yesterday I can here a knocking very well – but only when warmed up. Does this makes sense??
Also, I needed to build in the new radiator (damn expensive 700 AU$) because the old one burst suddenly (top tank was plastic shit - new one of course metal). When this happened, the engine was for a very short time very close to over heating (at the line to the red area for around 1 minute).
Since them I recognize here and then following scenario: when restarting the already warmed up engine after a short stop (for example at petrol station) my idle is damn low (500), even stalls sometimes! But about this problem I’ll ask for your help and advices in an extra thread.
But may I can start with a little problem/question directly here?
I have a lose cable, and don’t know where it has to connect to?! There running at the right side two wires directly from the main engine wire tree next to distributer, down close to the alternator. One of them is going into its place to be next to the oil filter. And the other cable ya..its lose and I cant find any point where it has to go!?! I have no access to make a better picture... the only fix point I can give is these second wire which goes down next to the oil filter. Can somebody please check at your 4Runner?!
At last a picture from my first car love:
Cheers and all the best to everybody here!
