That guy's chart is horrible for runners. He does mention pickups throughout so maybe there is credibility in that aspect. If you have a factory locking rear then you should have 4.30s. This is what I have and your code matches mine exactly. However, if you don't have the locking rear then you should have 4.10s. I have contacted a dealer before regarding the codes and they had no idea.

Yeah, his chart doesn't seem accurate for much of anything after the early-mid 90's anyways.

This link breaks it down pretty good. http://www.top4runners.com/ja/runhist319982.html Basically if you have a V6, auto, and stock 265/70/r16s and no rear locker then you have 4.10s. All that plus the rear locker then you have 4.30s.

Specs for all the models are listed just under the Powertrain heading on the link provided.

I think that if you really want to regear, then 4.56s would probably do just fine. I'm not extremely knowledgeable on this stuff but from the reading I have done this is what I would regear to with 33s. Honestly though many people here run 33's with stock gears and don't have any problems at all. You will obviously notice it, but it shouldnt be unbearable by any means.

As far as gears.. the names precision and yukon stand out in my mind as good gears.

4.88 Gears

OK, here's the deal: I have the exact same 4runner as you (to the guy that asked the question starting this thread) - except mine is Limited, but that makes no difference to this. I believe I have 4.56 gears and you do as well. They might also be 4.30's, but it doesn't matter what they are now. I've done a lot of research into this since I'm about to get mine swapped as well, so here's what you need to know:

stock tires = 4.30 or 4.56
31" - 33" tires = 4.88
34" - 36" tires = 5.29

I'm still runnin stock gears on 31"s, and my mileage sucks because my engine has to work really hard to push those bigger tires with the same old set of gears (kind of like trying to pedal a bike up a hill in a high gear). So what you need is to get a new RING and PINION for you front and rear differentials. That should run you about $200 each + install. So basically, if you want normal mileage and do not want to loose performance, if you're increasing tire size up to 33" or however big you said, you definately need to upgrade the gears as well.

And I apologize if everything is not precise, but this is just everything I've learned from doing a good bit of research on 4runner gears.

No 3rd gen w/ auto tranny ever had 4.56 gears. The lowest gears you could get in an auto were 4.30s and that was ONLY if you have the rear locker. 4.56s were an option ONLY in manuals if the 4Runner had the upgraded tire package (265/70r16.)

You said you have stock gears with "bigger" 31s?? What size tires did your truck come with because it should have been 31's. If your truck is a Limited (mine is also) without the rear locker then you should have 265/70/r16 tires stock, which is a 31" tire and 4.10 gears.

Good info on what gears are needed for what size tire, but check the link I provided in my first post for your accurate gear ratio. It's not 4.56.

Thanks for the correction, and yeah it sounds like mine is probably the same as yours. So do you still have stock gears then?

For future reference:

I like to know my gear ratio. On this link my gear ratio is (A04A) 4.56.....Gearratiosanddiffs Is this good reference.
That website is very wrong. I checked my 4runner and was bummed to learn I had the 3.15 ratio (doorsill says A05A). But I still have my original window sticker, and I checked and my vehicle has the SV upgrade.

The SV upgrade includes (among other things) 265/70R16 tires and importantly a 4.556 rear diff. The VIN on my car, the window sticker, and the door sill sticker all match. To be fair the doorsill still shows my tire size being the smaller 225 wheel (Toyota lazy), so maybe they didn't change the gear ratio code too.

No matter what, the reference that's linked is sloppy, don't use it. It doesn't list my 4.556 gear ratio, it doesn't show the 4.55 gear ratio that also existed. It also lists a 4.56 gear ratio that doesn't exist afaik, either they rounded up the 4.556 gear ratio to get that number (bad practice considering the precision these ratios have) or the writer had bad information.

Always best to verify them. However, as old as these rigs are now previous owners could have swapped out regeared etc.

The 2 [4wd v6]main ratios are 4.10 and 4.30
There are several factory ratios with 2wd and the 5 mostly run a different ratio as well.

I personally haven't seen the stickers on the doors wrong that were messed with. However, I know there are some out there.

The question is were they factory snickered wrong or did folks change them and not document the changes is what I am trying to figure out?

For tire size, it's extremely common for the wrong size to be shown on the door sticker.

Explained here, the 225 size was the standard tire size and every base/SR5 model had this tire size on the door sticker. Toyota would put a sticker on for a 225 tire even if the 4runners were optioned with larger tires. Only the limited got the 265 tire size on their door sticker.

Plus I know the history of my vehicle extremely well at this point (from working on it and researching it). Most of it's life was spent with an elderly 4th owner who I purchased from. None of the other owners owned it long enough to do those sorts of mods. The mods that were done weren't mechanical (I have yet to find one), mostly stereo and aesthetic mods.

285/75/16 = 32.83" or ~33". I re-geared to 4.56 from the stock 4.10. Made a really noticeable difference. I wouldn't go with 4.88 unless this was a trail-only rig. My .02

Straight, simple, concise, and correct.....worth more than $0.02

How do you find it on the highway? Im running mine as general overall daily plus off-road rig (mostly winter snow, some steep climbs not much, usually running chains.) will have between 33's in summer and 30s in winter.

Is there a way to determine what gears my 98 SR5 Automatic is running by VIN number? I do not know what the original tire size was, somewhere along the way someone put 17" rims on it with 265/70/17s.

Original tire size 265/70/r16

There is a 7.28% increase in tire diameter from 265/70/16 > 285/75/16.

There is a difference of 11.22% lower gear ratio from 4.10 > 4.56

I thought 4.88 would result in really high revs on the highway and that is borne out by most peoples' experience. I can tell you that the 4.56 gears resulted in being able to climb certain hills in 4th gear that required 3rd gear with the stock ring/pinion of 4.10s and the 285s. Hills were a struggle in general before installing the 4.56's. It cruises nicely on the highway.

Look at the sticker in your driver door jamb. If it says A03A then it's 4.10 gearing. If you need help post a picture of it.

It does indeed say A03A. Earlier in this thread someone posted that the tire size the sticker states may be incorrect so I wasn't sure if the gear info might be as well.

I am restoring mine to be "built for comfort" and to haul a travel trailer that weighs approximately 3300lbs. I wonder if I'd be better off regearing to 4.556? I'll mostly be traveling highways and interstates. Off road usage will mostly be limited to forest service roads and other non-paved roads to get to trail heads.
