Geared People Running 33's-35's: ATTN

It's 575$ for the complete assembled 3rd from ECGS. That's drastically cheaper then SC install by my math.

This thread is annoying. At first, everyone was all gung-ho for regearing. Then a few indecisive, negative nancies chimed in.

Basically, my truck is a dog with 33's. Cruise control is useless. I have 4.10's. I don't currently want to deal with the headache of an SC. Should I regear to 4.88's?

Yes or no?

yes.

do you ever intend to go to larger tires? 4.88's for 33's, 5.29's for 35's.
thats the general rule.

haha, yes. what else would you do besides get smaller tires and dump weight in that case, the only question then is 33~35 as big as your every going to go?

Each person has their own opinion...31s and 4.10s (many stock rigs) are not DRASTICALLY different from 4.30s (limited/e-locker) and 33s. Sure it will be a little more sluggish, but to imply I would be overworking my engine and tranny by large amounts is a stretch. The only times I even strive for more power/better gearing is on mountain passes on the highway. during wheeling and normal acceleration it is absolutely fine.
Me personally I will spend the money on a SC than gears. not to mention if I'm hauling a load slightly shorter gears are still going to leave me way down on power.
If I'm going 70 up a grade in 3rd at idk 3200rpm, I don't want shorter gears forcing me to run a similar mph at 3700 or w/e rpm. to ME that is working the engine more, I hate cruising for extended times with rpms up there. Whereas if I have more power from the SC it is easier for my rig to motor on up at 70 at 3200 while maintaining speed also without nearly as much throttle input
I'm not the only person out there with this same opinion, there is plenty of stock geared SC trucks out there, and plenty of geared rigs, and some with both...its just w/e floats your boat.
If I was going 35s you bet I'd regear in a heartbeat
maybe if it was geared correctly, you would be running 4th, not 3rd.

and, i notice thats your opinion, but its wrong.

YES...regear.

Of course this whole thread comes down to preference, but there's no denying that going to either a 4.88 for 33's or 5.29 for 35's will put the engine back in its sweet spot. And if you swap your 3rd & front diff with ECGS, you won't have to rebuild your diffs in a year or less, as many guys have to do with the SC.

Gears are just simpler IMO. They're just dumb gears...with teeth that lock in & spin around. LOL. And with 185k miles on my 4Runner, I'll choose the gears for less excessive wear & tear on the drivetrain. Don't get me wrong, I love superchargers, but I know if I had one I'd want to USE it...and would be rebuilding it AND my engine within a year (and I would be broke already from buying the SC). :peace:

Haven't been on the site in a while...this thread was great...loved getting my head bit off because I prefer to have more power over some measily gears.

fwiw, I'm still on 33s and 4.30s on one rig, and 4.88s and 35's on the other. no desire to put 4.88s in the truck on 33s. it would be terrible on the highway, the city would be awesome sure. I've actually switched the wheels around to see how driveability was with different combinations. and I also have a friend on stock gears 33s, and supercharged...it drives better than BOTH my rigs :)

My original opinion/statement stands....supercharge the beast, its drastically down on power...now amount of gear is going to move it out of its own way without screaming in RPMs

I don't understand, maybe someone can explain how more power can make it easier on your tranny. THAT is why you would regear... seems...

So with torque multiplying in 4lo how easy is that on your trans and other drive train parts? 230-250whp and similar torque from an sc on the stock trans driving around isn't going to grenade it because you didn't regear....really if you gear your rig you'll probably blow the rear dif sooner anyways.
I don't understand the thought process I suppose. I've had 500hp cars fed thru transmissions designed for 1/3 of that. You learn how to take care of stuff, and if shit breaks you make it better
