Gearing help 4.56 yes or no

Need expert help from guys with both gear ratios

Rite now I have a factory 4.10's And auto transmission
Spec on my 02 runner
- 3.4L w/ 2nd gen Trd supercharger
-urd 7th injector and 2.2 pulley
- shrockworks bumper and sliders and bud builts
Also running 285' km2

Problem is i noticed a difference when I switched from t/ko's
To 285's km2's. Keep in mind I have to drive about 3-4 hours to get to trails and camp site. The 4runner is used mostly for overland camping and some very mild rocks.

I have read a lot and have a few things on order like cbi rear bumper and a cvt rtt.

I want to get the best bang for my buck and the gears are going in with both arb lockers, I am only doing this once.

So will 4.56 be the better fit since I drive long distances and still partially day drive the truck or will I not notice any change and wish I did 4.88?
Help

I'm no expert, but from what I've read, I think you'll want to go with 4.88's with 33" tires. I'm currently in the process of getting 5.29's for my rig with 35" tires. So that seems comparable.

Good luck.

Above shows your RPMS when doing 65 MPH in a 1:1 gear ratio gear. In a 5 Speed that's 4 gear. I don't think your auto has a 1:1 gear ratio but this will tell you where about you want your gears. If you want it about the same as stock then go with somewhere in the green. If you want better acceleration then go with somewhere in the red. Red normally is better for offroad. Hope this helps.

The only thing I don't like about my new 4.88s is the high RPM on the highway. The stock 4.30s were good cruising on the hwy with 35's and plenty for my 33's. I'm also in verry hilly country and keep about 300lbs of gear in the rig at all times.

If you're not in hills and hauling then go for the 4.56's. They will work even if you decide to go 35's one day.

My '99 has stock 4.30s and 285s, I think it's it's a tad sluggish. In my situation, I'd like to put 4.88s in it. In your situation, with more power under the hood and at a lower elevation to boot, I think 4.56s would work well for a mix of highway and offroad.

Are you sure you have 4.10s though? I thought all autos came with 4.30 stock. Going from 4.30 to 4.56 hardly seems worth it.

If I were to re-gear it would be to 4.56s, I do a lot of Highway driving and the lower rpms make a big difference in fuel economy. I currently have 4.10s. It's really about what you want more... Lower trail gearing and off the line performance or more fuel economy and less noise once you are up to speed.

Get 4.88s. You WILL eventually think about 35s later on. That supercharger makes a world of difference. Id stick with junkyard 4.30s and some work on the supercharger if youre worried about reving high. If you really want to check how high you rev, use the grimm jeeper calculator. Its exact and based the tranny you have

My 99 5 speed is 4.10. The donor 5 speed I took an e-locker from was also 4.10. Do the spin test to determine what your gear ratio is. (Thanks Nelsonmd.

1) Put your vehicle in 2WD mode and tranny in N.
2) Jack up 1 rear tire off the ground (leave parking brake off)
3) Crawl under the vehicle and put a mark on the driveshaft (tape, paint, marker, etc.) so that you can see and count the rotations of the driveshaft
4) Do the same to the lifted tire and have a friend slowly spin the lifted tire 20 times while you count the number of revelations of the drive shaft.
Take the number of DS revolutions and divide by 10, this is your gear ratio.

Usually automatics are geared a bit lower than manuals. My 4 cylinder manual came with 3.73s while 4 cylinder automatics came with 3.91s

I'd like to hear from anyone that has regeared. I'm in the 4.30 crowd but with the 285's can't stand how sluggish it is. Just drove from Dallas to Cape Cod, all in all it performed well, didn't like hills/mountains too much. I was however getting around 17+MPG which I liked coming from a lifted tundra that got 11MPG. This is currently my daily driver, with minimal off road use. Then sometime next year this might become my daughters first car. I really want to regear, I'm thinking 4.56 or 4.88. Just looking for the best all around gear ratio.

The beauty of 4.56's is that you can find them in junkyards and then turn around and sell your 4.10 or 4.30 third/clamshell for minimal loss

4.10s are fine with 31s but sluggish with 32s.
4.30s are fine with 32s but sluggish with 33s.
4.56s should be perfect for 33s.
4.88s can be used with 35s, 5.29s with 37s and up.

Now if you just want a trail rig, go as low geared as you can if you have a single t-case.

4.56s are great because like clund21 said, Toyota made OEM 4.56s that you can swap in.
