Gearing question.....

Okay let me first start off by saying "yes I have read and researched a bunch."

I am going to be running 33 inch tires (not any larger) and I know that the recommended ring and pinion is 4:56 with manual trans............ keep in mind that I already have a good condition V6 third member with 4.56 gears....... But a little bit more research I found that it will cost me nearly double for the front reverse cut 4:56 gears for my High pinion diff.....
This brings of a dilemma, I'm wondering what would it do if I ran 4:88 front and rear? I could literally by both the front and the rear for just a few dollars more then the cost of the single 456 front set.
So, If I'm understanding correctly it should make my speedometer read a little bit off. But my real question is how does it affect my power and torque / crawl, take off, towing, top end?[

Yes your speedo will be off a couple miles per hour. When I had my stock 4.10s on 33s, it was reading about 5 miles per hour too slow (so if speedo said 65 I was going 70) Now with my 4.88s its about 2 miles per hour off in the other direction (if speedo said 65 I was going ~63). As far as power and torque, I noticed a huge difference from 4.10 to 4.88. Better freeway pulling power, stronger on hills, I wasn't having to downshift so much etc, But since you're already at a 4.56 I don't think you would notice much of a difference going to a 4.88. Unless you plan to run bigger tires in the future, I would stick with the 4.56s.

No I have 4:10 gears now. The reason I'm asking is because I do have a good condition 456 and was wanting to go up to those. But after research find that it is nearly as expensive to buy the one reverse cut gear for a front High pinion diff as it would be to buy 488 standard diff gear and front High pinion. I am unsure as to why they charge so much extra for the 456.

I ran 4.88's in my 84 for a year with 33's. it was perfect.
a year later went to 35's and 5.29's. be sure that you are positive that you are gonna go bigger

is it really worth the extra expense to go HP?
your lift looks pretty sedate.

Well I've got the high pinion in there now and it has 410 gears. With 33 inch tires that I'm adding on to it the 410 gears are going to be pretty darn lethargic. It's not all that great right now with the 31 in tires I have. It's not horrible either. And yes I'm 99% positive I'm not going to go any larger then 33 inch tires. I have no use for tires any larger than that. Gets any bigger and I won't be able to get into the rig. As it sits right now the floor is about waist-high and the seat is about the center of my chest. Keep in mind that I have bad back and bad leg issues. also I daily Drive on Road with only a little bit of Overland / off-road on weekends and whatnot.

So my 2nd gen is factory 4.88 front and rear and I have 32" tires, with 5speed I swapped. Only issue I have is highway top speed. At 70 mph engine is at 3,000 rpm so I don't go much above that as that's just wasteful for gas. Speedo is fairly accurate. Maybe a mile or 2 off but I forget which direction.

If you can handle that, set the cruise control and roll with it. You'll have better low end, your gears and engine will thank you. But you'll sacrifice top speed.

do the 4.88s. you will be just a touch under geared for 33's, but it will drive great. revving these motors out a bit wont hurt them. presumably you do take it off pavement, THAT is here the gears will really show themselves, and you will appreciate the driving characteristics.
