You will need to re-gear both axles.

Running different ring and pinion ratios front and rear will cause binding in the driveline and can have VERY nasty results.

Now, knowing this, you can run different ratios if you ONLY use 4WD off-road in gooey stuff, etc. Some racers intentionally run a higher ratio in the front diff, but they spend so much time air-borne that it really does not matter much. They are just after the greater bite from faster spinning front wheels when they DO touch down.

If you have an axle failure, you can run different ratios for a while as long as you have front hubs and keep them unlocked. Then it really does not matter. I did this for a while. I blew the rear axle in my old Ford and the junkyard axle I got had a different ratio. I swapped the ring and pinion later, but it took me a few weeks to get to it. For "normal" operation of your rig, you will want to have them both the same tho.

You can also get away with it by carefully selecting tire sizes. Say for some reason, you want 35 inch tires in the rear and 33's up front. You can run different ratios to make up for the size difference. (saw this on a really gnarly 70 Blazer...NIIICE rig!)
