General Grabber AT/X 285's Won't Balance

Had them Road Force balanced yesterday and they were perfect until I merged onto the freeway and hit about 50 when they started to shimmy pretty bad.

Brought them back to the shop today and they re-balanced them and took PSI down to 37, suggesting it may have been the increased pressure.

Merged onto freeway and same deal, pretty bad shimmy and steering wheel wobble.

Any ideas?

Thinking it is due to them being E load but can't be sure as I just switched from C load Falken A/T3W 265's.

My buddy has the same size grabber at/x and he hasn't had issues. I think he runs his 32-34 psi. I have 285s in a load E and find they ride much better under 35 psi. I'm no expert but it's worth a shot.

I doubt it's just being E load that's the issue. Have them check to see if one or more is out of round. I had a similar issue with some Nittos and ultimately had to give up on them.
You can also see if moving the wheel to a different corner changes the situation
 
I'm on my third set of 285's this month due to balance issues. 2 falkens that were oval, BFG's that they couldn't even get remotely balanced, and now I have Toyos that I love but the tire shop couldn't balance those either. I took it to Toyota and they did a road force. Smooth as glass for a few days and now it randomly shakes between 55-65 about 50 percent of the time. It's maddening.

So now what?
 
Had the ATX 265s put on my stock wheels today and watched the guy at Discount balance all five without much issue. Immediately hit the highway going home and cruised at 80 for a good while. No vibrations or noise at any speed.

I know that doesn’t help you much, but it could be as simple as the increased tire size, maybe the change in load rating as well.

Only issue that I have so far, is that they rub slightly. I thought I’d be able to avoid that issue with the stock size, but apparently not. Should be an easy fix though, as it looks to just barely catch the liner.

The venture trim has the gray TRD wheels on it, correct? Assuming those are coming through with the Bridgestone tires (I cannot remember if the Grapplers are on the venture), if they are not doing the bumper trim and fender liner mod at port for those vehicles, you could definitely rub with the increased offset of the TRD wheel.

TRD Pros are actually trimmed by Toyota at port... I think the trim job on my 2020 is no better than the trim I had to give my 2016 to fit LT265/70R17 Falken AT3Ws (which are notoriously large tires for the size) on SCS wheels...

I think my RF caliper is dragging a little and could be contributing to it. I should have a new one and new pads (changed rotors a few weeks ago due to warpage) to put on it either today or tomorrow. If that doesn't cure it I will probably wind up changing the lower control arm bushings out for urethane to see if that helps. I had no issues until I swapped wheels and tires. I had the exact same suspension with my stock trail wheels (with spacers no less) and stock size grabber ATX's for six months. Unfortunately I sold those right after I got my Methods and the first set of 285's. Strange thing with mine is when it's smooth it's smooth as glass and stays that way no matter how fast I drive. When it shakes I can feel it in the steering wheel starting about 53MPH and it's bad until 64 or so. But the faster I go I can still feel a vibration in the truck. But when it doesn't do it the truck truly is smooth. It is literally driving me insane. But with about $6k in modifications on even a low mileage 2011 that I still owe on I'm kinda stuck. Not to mention my income due to all this covid crap has taken a huge hit. If I had the means I would have thrown in the towel and bought a six speed TRDOR Tacoma a month ago. But I can't.

Yes sir, the grey “shiny” TRD wheels with the Bridgestone Duelers is what came stock, but no trim or liner mod unfortunately. The ATXs nearly look like 275s compared to the stockers. Well, at least I know what my next mod is going to be.. [emoji23]
 
so shimmy and steering wheel wobble?

i get wobble on my 4runner and no shimmy.. and no idea why or now to get that fixed.

i have at/x on my raptor.. balanced perfect. 35x12.5 size. drives like a dream
 
I just put ATX 285s on mine and it shook slightly at 40-65mph. It wasn't bad enough for me to worry too much about it but after about 500 miles of driving around town the shake started to go away.

I run mine at 36 psi and have just front Bilstein 5100s
at at 1.75".

I don't know about you but I had to trim quite a bit to get these tires to fit. I removed the mud flaps, moved the fender liners forward, and trimmed the bottom of the bumper close to 2 inches.

That's actually really crazy since the Duelers fit since the tires are so damn small for a 265/70R17. You put any decent size AT or MT on there in 265/70R17 and you're going to rub.

Interesting... Surprised they are not trimming.

I have 5100's in front and rear, fronts at 2.5". Ran may falken 265's for 2 years without a single wobble.

I too modded the liner and removed the mudflaps
 
I know this is a longshot but I recently removed the toyota logo centercaps on the rims prior to installing them....possible can be related to the wobble?

No, shouldn't cause a problem. I ran my stock rims with no centers and now with my aftermarket rims with the ATX tires I run them without centers, but I did run them with the centers for a couple days. Doesn't make a difference at all. Just aesthetic.
