General Grabber vs Nitto Ridge Grapplers

Hello all. In the final stages of negotiating with my installer for the following:

Bilstein 2.5 " suspension upgrade
Pro Comp 69 Wheels

New Tires:


He's pushing the Nitto Ridge Grapplers over my choice, General Grabbers.

I want a solid AT tire that is reliable on pavement but capable off road and to be honest, I want white lettering on the tire.

He's pushing the Nitto's pretty hard, and it's only about $100 total difference.

TireRack says the Grabbers are their #1 A/T by reviews.

Any thoughts from anyone on this? This is the look Im' going for FYI:

I hear plenty of bad things about the Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Conversely I hear very few complaints about the General Grabber ATX. Get the tires you want and don't let the installer push you into a decision you don't want.

I'd say go with the Generals although I have never run them. I had 1 1/4 sets of Ridge Grapplers and they are just mediocre. (Second set one was horribly out of round and had and had to fight with Nitto for a month to get 50% back on them.) I went to the Cooper St Maxx and it's far better all round albeit a bit more aggressive than the Grapplers.

Id go with the General Grabber... always wanted to try a set.

I had the Nitto Terra Grappler AT on my Silverado and I wasn’t really impressed or disappointed with the tire. I think mediocre is a good descriptor.

Eventually they started cracking and replaced them with Cooper Discoverer AT3

Go with the ones you want. I went with Ridge Grapplers in SL. They are light, quiet on road, handle rain and puddles well and almost everything not made out of wood is soft in Central Florida so the SL work in the sandy mud just fine for me. Not trying to persuade you with that, because if you want raised whites and if don't get them it will always be in the back of your mind when you look at at your truck, get a flat etc. regret sucks...

You can go to Discount Tire Direct, enter your vehicle, then choose the tire size, and then search by Treadwell. That will give you lots of independent tire testing. The ATX gets good reviews here and not so good scores on the testing. I have no idea, personally. Never ran any Generals.

Also, remember that tires play together with shocks and springs. In my experience, lighter duty shocks springs go well with SL tires and heavier duty suspension with heavy tires. My current LTE tires on a stiffer suspension actually feel better than SL on the same. I am not sure about the engineering specifics but tire weight is one part of the story.

Ha! I just put my first 300 miles on the sibling ATZ P3 and cannot have been more impressed. Offroad is obvious, but I have been shocked by how good they have been on road with my heavy duty suspension.

I have no experience with the Nittos but had Generals on my Grand Cherokee and loved them. 2 sets worth as a matter of fact. I have Falkens on my 4Runner mostly because of the great reviews here and any other place I looked plus the Grabbers were not available in the size I wanted. I don't think you can go wrong with the Generals.

I wish the Mickey's were available in the tire size I prefer. Great tires. Generals Too.
I agree with you about handling the load and heavy suspension, I think the Coopers may run smoother than the Ridge Grapplers even though they have a more aggressive and deeper tread. I don't have a lot of time on them yet, (Bout 600 miles) however dry road manners, deep snow, ice and slush are all superior to the RG's. I have a 700 mile dirt trip in New Mexico coming up with lots of highway miles on the way back. I'll update the St Maxx thread with some comparisons and observations after that.

Curious to hear your thoughts as Ill need to replace my RGs soon. Ive actually had pretty good luck with them. Very quiet, had them in the deep snow in the Sierras here, deep mud, sandstone rock etc and they alwayd had great traction. Been looking for something a little more aggressive for the next time

ridge grapplers are decent tire generally. HOWEVER, if you are in snow/ice they suck ass.
