I have a 2018 TRD-Off with KDSS and was told by an off road establishment that they don't make gears as of yet for my rig which has rear lockers. Is this really the case? I recently installed some kings with 17x9 275 70 and I did so only because I was concerned with power loss. I would like to upgrade tires to 285s later this year but if I do I would like to have the option of regearing. I'm a newbie so can't post pics of the setup yet.

That is false. Find yourself a better shop that has some idea what they're talking about. Search regear on the site and there is tons of information. My '13 is functionally the same as your '18. (And I'm re geared) You can have the same gear options as any other 5th gen.

Not accurate at all. I've got a 2016 Trail with a rear E-Locker and 4.56 gears.
Highly recommend going with East Coast Gear Supply's completes as it'll save you the headache of finding a knowledgeable shop.

You can, but should not regear. There are very few gearing options. 3.73 you have now, 3.91 OEM from the gx, 4.56 or 4.88 aftermarket. There is only 1 manufacturer of aftermarket gears for these. Regardless of brand on the box, the gears inside are all the same. That's it. Also the gears are the same for the elocker and non elocker diffs. The only difference in the two diffs with respect to gear change are carrier bearing on the elocker side and the gasket for the axle mount.
3.91 is not worth the effort. With 275/70/17s 4.56 will be too low for highway speeds comfortably. I currently have 4.56 in mine with 285/75/17 and I'll be swapping back to 3.73 when I have a free weekend. They are great in town and on the trail. Not great at 85mph. I built spare diffs, so I have both ratios setup. if you spend much time on the highway, stick with what you have.

I went with East Coast Gear Supply. I have a 2017 TRDOR running 4.56.
You do not need to regear for 285's. I've run my 4.56's with 265, 285, 295, and 35x12.50. The power is great when paired with 285 and the low gearing off-road is ideal. The highway MPG is horrible.
That being said, if you have the funds and don't mind poor hwy MPG I highly recommend it

Lots of geared 5th gens out there so that shop doesn't know what they are talking about. As mentioned, ECGS is the way to go. I went the built route where they ship you complete third member and clamshell then you send your stock one's back to them to get the core deposit back. I chose 4.56 for various reasons.
285 is kind of a tipping point IMO for the 4runner on gearing. Do you need to, no, could you yes. Anything bigger than 285 I'd gear if you can. I'm running 295/70 and the re-gear is great. I'm about to go to 35's though and knew I would for whatever it's worth. Truck shifts like its supposed to now and doesn't hunt for gears. I can keep it in 5th on the interstate at 70 up hills again...haha

With 285's, I regeared to 4.56 and love it. Gained some MPG and now have the powerband back. Wayyyyyy better than stock.
I'll definitely not be gearing unless I have some 285s. interesting you advise against it though and I see your point. Given this info, I will probably entertain gearing once I've had the opportunity the roll on the 285s. Thanks again!!

I think it depends a lot on your vehicle and use. if you're heavy with lots of armor and gear and don't need to spend a lot of highway miles it's probably great. Id love to have a 4.10 option. I think that would be perfect for me. Neither 3.73 or 4.56 are really ideal. So it's kinda choosing between two that don't really fit for me. Or I need some 35s.

2018 with factory elocker and I went with 4.88's from ECGS, they send you complete built diffs, you swap them out and ship your old diff back to refund the core deposit.
Im on 33's and with the 4.88's I am getting 16MPG which is as good as mines ever gotten since Ive owned it. Mix of in town and highway. Shifts so much better now.
