Getting my TRD suspension replaced piece by piece.

2019 TRD Pro here. 27k miles. Only off roading it sees is on the beaches, although the roads in RI give any suspension a beating. So far I've had the front shocks replaced with the redesigned 2021 shocks under the TSB, after I developed the "clunk." Then....developed a loud squeak in the rear when going slowly over bumps. Was told it was the rear control arm bushings being prematurely worn. Got both rear control arms replaced. Squeak is still there. Was told the rear control arm squeak was fixed but that was masking another issue causing the squeak. Left rear shock is bad and rubbing on other components. So now I'm waiting for that to come in to get that replaced. I guess I'll have an almost new suspension. Toyota has been awesome about replacing parts with no hassle. Any other TRD owners having these issues?

I don't know if this issue is the same one you're having... A few years ago, my rear suspension was squeaking terribly. It was actually the emergency brake line rubbing. They reseated it and it fixed it. It then happened on the other side and they fixed that... Have them check that.

Also, so far so good on my suspension. I've beat the heck out of mine rock crawling and off road. I'm in a TRD OR so not a pro... all stock. I'm hoping mine lasts. I really beat it up off road and am kind of surprised it's still functioning and not rattling or anything. That would drive me nuts.

Thanks. If replacing the rear shock doesn't fix it, I'll have them check that. In addition to all my suspension issues, I also had the dreaded 62mph steering wheel shake. Service advisor said balancing may not help so they tried cross rotating last time I was in. I also upped the tire pressure to 35psi. I had been running the recommended 32. That all seemed to help. But while they were test driving it, he said the tech felt a vibration in the brakes. Turns out my front rotors were warped. They turned them for me under warranty. I wanna keep the vehicle so I've since purchased a 5yr/100k Toyota platinum warranty through gamester's connection for an unbelievable price.

Rear shock replaced. Squeak is still there. They are just randomly replacing parts as they, obviously, cannot find the source of the noise. At least I'm getting a new suspension. I'll have them check the parking break cable when I go in for my oil change in another month.

I have a 2019 TRD Pro. No problems with the front shocks yet, but I have the squeak in the rear going over bumps. It's *much* louder when loaded, which is unfortunate, since most of what I use it for is dispersed camping and going up trails to get to remote hiking and fishing spots which means it's loaded a lot.

Anyway after about hearing it for about 6 months, I had a few friends come over Friday and jump up and down on the sliders while I looked underneath.

3 of the driver's side rear sway-bar bushings are making the noise. I'm taking it to the dealer next Friday. I'm dreading it, because I suspect they will do something stupid like insist on just lubricating them first, then I will have to go back when that doesn't work and they can replace them under warrantee.

But I wanted to make sure I could point them at exactly where the noise was coming from so that I didn't have the "fix by random guess" experience you are having

I just finished a summer with a lot of beach driving, and still blowing sand out of the undercarriage after several high pressure rinses and compressed air douchings.
I am concerned about my bushings and other parts getting ground down by sand I haven't removed. Do you think sand might be a contributing cause?

My 2 cents = unlikely. I live in Seattle so no sand and it rains 6 months of the year so the bottom of the truck is ridiculously clean, and it still happened.

Further, the whole point of the bushings is to be firmly attached around whatever they are holding, so if there's sand getting in they are already worn.

Why they degraded on my vehicle when it's only 3 years old is unclear. I expect crap parts to start with. Not super impressive but easy enough to replace.

I don't think so. I'm always careful to wash the undercarriage and remove any sand. This is also my third 4Runner and I took my previous 4runners on the beach as well with no issues. Also, any salty sand I get on the 4Runner from the beach doesn't compare to the massive amount of salt and sand that gets caked under there from the winter. I'm in the northeast and they use an obscene amount to salt and sand on the roads here.

I'll be going back in 2000 miles for my next oil change so I'll have them look again.

It's good you have the warranty but the dealership is screwing you around. Surely wasting days with your truck! You don't need to be a mechanic to visually inspect you vehicles components. Squeaks are usually harmless. If it annoys you Vaseline your bushings. All though you have the warranty the dealership is still getting paid the same if you didn't. So they will take advantage of a squeak by replacing your entire suspension. I bet the last thing they do to fix your squeak works instead of the first try. Hmmmm.

replacing my suspension piece one by one, is how i ended up with kings, icon, metal tech, and total chaos parts on my truck.


..and my truck still rattles and squeaks like a "covered wagon".


Buy lots of silicon/teflon lube spray and go to town on all the rubber/poly bushings every oil change or so..might or might not help.

You're probably right. Maybe I'll let them replace everything and when the suspension is all brand new, I'll just crawl underneath with some silicone spray and fix it myself...lol.

There you go! I'm in the middle of replacing pretty much everything at 100 thousand. I want that warranty! I want to do the work myself though.

OK, update, the dealer replaced the bushings but also said that the driver side rear shock was messed up so they are replacing that under warantee.

I can't quite get my head around a shock they said goes for $1k failed after 2 years and 18k miles.

Super dependable stuff Toyota. Good work.

Same here. Left rear shock replaced. Plastic sleeve had gouged the shock. Noise is still there. I crawled under and the right rear shock is badly gouged as well. I guess they will have to replace that as well. I will have had all four Fox shocks replaced. They should have stayed with the Bilsteins.

Hard to say. What year is yours? Mine is a 2019 so perhaps it was just the first year and they've been redesigned.

Doesn't seem like it. It was the first year for the Fox shocks. They didn't do a very good job with the design. They updated the front shocks in 2021. Not sure if the rear shocks were updated as well. Have you had your front shocks replaced under the TSB?

Nope - front shocks have been fine. Just this one.

Update. I take it down to the dealer ("we need 10 days to get the part so we will book you an appointment in 2 weeks"). Leave it there all day.

They call in the aft and say "we don't have the part; come get your car."

SMH as the kids say.

Then they say the thing is backordered for potentially a few months due to demand.

Which leads me to believe this is borderline a recall, if they are replacing so many of them they can't keep them in stock.
