Getting serious about off-road navigation

There may be settings available to fix this, but I don't know what they are. I haven't looked hard, though, either.

Mine is an Inreach SE, from 2015, made by Delorme. The Inreach Mini may have updated connection capabilities.

I went ahead and got the mini at a Black Friday sale and was actually just trying it today.
Regrettably my old iPads (2's?) were a fail.
Won't consistently display heading, speed and tracks.
After messing with it for a couple hours - I tried it on my newish iPhone 7 and everything worked within minutes.
Guess I have to get a new tablet.

I have read somewhere that you can use the inReach just like a Glo/bad elf/etc.
You can even go inactive on the comms subscription and just use the GPS feature.
Haven't tried it myself since I'm early in the messing around-learning phase.
Maybe once my free 30 day new purchase subscription is done I'll try it inactive.

I just tried with my ca. 2015 Delorme Inreach. I cannot connect via bluetooth outside the Earthmate app. The Delorme shows up in the list of bluetooth devices, but apparently the connection protocols are non-standard and only Earthmate knows how to do it. Apparently the Inreach mini is more standardized. Sounds like progress.

Doesn't really bother me since both my phone and my tablet are GPS enabled. Good to know that Garmin stepped things up, though.

In Delorme's defense, this Inreach thing was a brand-new concept in 2015. Not surprising they played it close to the vest.

I'm still happy as can be with my Inreach. I never go into the woods (or desert) without it. I think you'll like the mini, and I would encourage you to go ahead and get the subscription. I keep mine active year-round at the $13/month safety level. That's nothing compared to what I spend on vehicle mods and gas getting to the backcountry. The peace of mind is priceless.
