Sounds like you took that as a personal attack Brian. I think the link you posted said exactly what the guy said. 1)Subaru 2)Mazda 3)Toyota 4)Honda. He wasn't misleading anyone. Just stating the facts and giving his personal opinion. Besides the name of this thread isn't what is the best family sedan, it's a dude getting ideas about what car to help his girlfriend look for.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a jerk. I was just in shock that Mazda was rated higher than Toyota and wanted to state that a Mazda 3 is not a better car than say a Prius or Camry .

Get a Subaru. I've got an '05 Impreza 5-spd and have had no troubles. Good gas mileage, great in the snow, and feels like a go-cart compared to the 4runner!

The wife drives an '05 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited wagon, it's been a great car! AWD, heated leather, a HUGE sunroof, lots of room. My only regret is we didn't go for a GT, more power, extra gear in the auto, LSD rear diff, and similar fuel economy.
That being said, Honda makes great cars, and Toyota makes great (although bland) cars as well.

My wife drives an '09 CR-V. My 19 yo daughter drives an '05 CR-V which I paid 10K for with 46K miles. My 16 yo son drives an '07 Impreza which I paid 10K for. I drive a Toyota. I go for reliability and durability. Can you see a trend here?
I'm going to second this, one of my old girlfriends drove a CRV, she got great mileage. Also, she crashed it three separate times - and with each crash she and the car came out fine. I never drove it, but it's definitely a reliable ride.

Is that a graded bolt? Does it say 8.8 on the head? To hold down a piece of plastic?

My parents have two 4th gen camries, a 1998 which I drove from 2007 until 2010 until I got my runner, and a 2000 which they bought for my sister in 2008, both 4 bangers. Both were purchased with around 100k and now have around 135k on each of them and they run flawlessly. No drivetrain maintenance besides oil changes and two tranny flushes has been done to each within that period of miles. Sometimes it's a relief to jump in the old 98 camry and just drive. The tranny is tight and the engine still purrs. It's so much more easy to drive then my 4runner. My sister's car is even in good mechanical shape despite that it's a girl driving the sh1t out of it and bascially neglecting it. Just my 2 cents....

Sorry, I should have said "reliability" rankings... I was half-listening to the local news. And yes, they are "overall" ratings, but at least reliability seems to be a better indicator than initial quality. I always like to see resale value trends. Excluding regional market conditions, you can get a pretty good idea of the reputation of a vehicle or brand... again, subjective, but another tool to help make a buying decision.

Don't buy a cheap Ford, that's a disaster waiting to happen. Highly recommend a Mazda 3 for a low cost, highly reliable, high quality car. Not sure how low mileage you can get for 11k, but it'd be worth a strong look.
