Gobi Ladder - Stronger Gas Spring?

I had to talk to Paul about another issue so I asked him about it. So, Mr. Have the Struts But Didn't Tell Anybodylets get that video up! Did you install them yourself? How was it? Who makes them?
They pop on and off. Though you will need someone to hold that DAMM HEAVY door whilst doing it! Its a very simple install, that should no longer than 5 min.
Paul said its a special order, like you cant go into a store and buy them or order them online. I think he has a deal with a commercial company being a commercial auto store :shrug:. I will post some pictures when I get off work around lunchtime.

Installing the new gas struts
What’s needed?
X2 Human Beings (One being strong and tall)
X1 Small flathead screwdriver
To remove the stock gas struts:
Have someone hold the rear door to the highest comfortable height they can reach. What I experienced was the higher the door was held the easier it was to "pop" the struts out of place. Make sure the person holding the door has a good and comfortable grip and warn them! Then with the small flathead screwdriver place it where image one shows (see image one and two) Then pry in the direction away from the truck, grab the strut towards the bottom and start "feeling" it out, freeing it from the ball-bearing attached to the truck. You might have to give it a good “tug”. NOTE: I would do the bottom ones first, than the top ones. Any Questions, just ask.
To put the new struts in:
Same process, get someone to hold the door open, make sure you have the struts the right way up (see images) and line them up, then pop them in place.
These new heavy duty struts have no marking of any description on them, what so ever! Just so you know, their MAFIA struts! :ak472:

Good question, no you don't need to remove the little bracket, so to speak. Simply pry it enough to loosen it from the ball-bearing its attached to.
Looking forward to seeing the images!

How strong/stiff are the new struts? Are they so stiff that if you install them but take off the ladder it would be unmanageable?
I'm heading down to talk with Paul next weekend (getting some lights installed) and debating on whether I want to do the ladder as well. I'm leaning that way but wondering what the repercussions are if I change my mind (or want to swap it off/on) - do I just take off the ladder? Or do I have to change the struts back too?

They're pretty stiff, I don't know the exact "weight pressure" of them though. FYI: I pre-installed my circuit box and aux switch's prior to wiring my lights with paul and it still took 10 hours +. Make sure you have the day to take the time.
The Ladder can come off pretty easily. A heat gun and an allan key and 15 minutes and its off. I have had mine off at least 6 times within the year. OCD!
IMO: The news struts have helped to lift the rear hatch beyond mid-way point, and fully open on its own. Before with the stock struts I had to help it most of the way in order for it to open fully.

Hi MeBeRunning... Next time you talk to Paul @ Gobi, is he going to be at the FJ Summit? and if so.. is he bringing some struts? I may take that opportunity to save on the shipping charge for those mafia struts!imp:

So far so good! I have had no issues to date, almost two weeks. Paul has my truck right now trying a few things out. He lent
Me his brand new 2012 Jeep Rubicon and I have to say there getting better but no where
Near close enough to trade in for my 4runner for one. Though I would kill for a trail in this color:

Paul thought it would take about 8 hours to get mine taken care of (including wiring in the aux fuse block and the switches but I also had less lights than you) but it ended up taking longer. Primarily due to an issue between the relay on the center light bar and the OTRATTW 3 way switch that I had picked out. However the guys at OTRATTW were there on a Saturday and worked with Paul to figure out the correct way to jump the posts on the switch so that it worked correctly with the Rigid lights.
It meant an extra night down in Denver but I was staying with my sister and my 9 week old niece - any extra time with the niece is good time. Plus it also meant I didn't have to drive back up to the mountains in a blizzard - everybody wins.
Long story short, I was very impressed with the effort and customer service of both Paul at Gobi and the guys at OTRATTW. Both of them went above and beyond to get the job done for me and make sure that everything works. It took awhile to get it scheduled but I couldn't be happier with the end result.
Oh, I ended up holding off on the ladder for now. I may take the plunge down the road but am confident enough in my abilities that I can install it (and the new struts) when/if the time comes.
And to pre-empt everyone out there: :worthless
I haven't had time to get any pics but when I do I'll get them posted asap.
. Looking forward to checking out what's next from Gobi.i'm with you. Test drove a 4dr and figured out theres more room to get in in a 2dr. I was too cramped up in a 4dr. But then again I grew up with jeeps like this:
