Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

Apologies for reviving this, but I need some assistance.
‘21 Limited looking to drop down from the stock 20’s and put 17’s on. I’m planning on going with the stock (for non-Limited) size 265/70/17 tires, but need help with the wheels.

I’m looking at a 17x9 wheel with 5.04” backspacing and +1mm offset. Am I safe with these, or do I need a different offset/backspacing? I’m more than ok with doing the fender liner mod for any clearance issues.

Thanks for your help!

Whew shit son. Doing the offset calculator it would appear you are going to have the outside lip of the wheel sticking out +39mm more, which is 1.54" further outward. Yes this will likely rub the inner fender on the bumper side at lock, and on bumps. I would suggest maybe 2" lift up front and you will most likely need to push the inner fenders forward and rebolt them in place.

I run that size wheel although never with a tire that small. 275/70 was the smallest. Lift is irrelevant if it's gonna rub it's gonna rub somewhere in the suspension cycle. If you do have to trim I wouldn't think it would be too bad. Possibly just move the fender liner.

Question for the hive. I'm due for new tires and plan to go with 255/75-17 KO2s instead of the oem sized 265s. My truck is currently stock, with stock TE wheels. I read where the 255s will fit fine as the vehicle is now, but wanted to get an idea how badly things might rub if I add some FN Six-Shooters to the mix over the coming year or so. They're 17x8, with a 0 offset instead of the 17x7.5 and +15 offset of the TE wheels. Any thoughts on this, or better yet, anyone have first hand experience with this combo?

Thanks.

Yes, You should be fine going up to 255/75 on your stock wheels, see chart on pg. 1 of this thread.

If you change wheels I do not think you should see any rubbing but its hard to say for certain. Increasing your tire diameter and going with wider & more negative offset wheels all leads to rubbing. For reference I have the same wheel specs (17x8, 0 offset) with 255/80s and they do not rub. But I also have a lift, no front wheel wells and careful alignment.

My recommendation is take measurements after you put your 255/75s on but before your new wheels. Turn the wheels to full lock in both directions and measure front and rear clearances at the wheel wells. While at full lock imagine the tire with a 15mm outward (radial) offset AND the 0.5" wider wheel to see if the new wheels would cause an issue.

Last thing you should look at what the tire manufacturer reccomends for wheel width based on your specific tire size. For example on Falken's website my 255/80s AT3ws recommend a 7" wheel. 255 is somewhat narroe for an 8" wheel but I have had no issues with tire installers putting mine on. BOL

Stock tires = 31.6" x 10.4"
255/75-17 = 32.1" x 10"
You are talking about 1/4" taller tire height, basically barely noticable over stock

Stock 17 x 7.5 +15mm offset when compared to
17 x 8 +0mm offset = inner lip 9mm further away from upper A-arm and outer lip +21mm further out than stock
So basically the new wheel will stick out about 0.82" further than the stock wheel. This is minimal, and with the narrower tire i feel like you should not have any problem especially if you have a leveling kit up front, just a simple 1" spacer on top of the front coil-over to lift the front end 1.5"
Also, unclipping the front inner fender on the bumper, pushing the inner fender further forward, and redrilling a new hole for the bolt. This is simple and keeps you from rubbing. Your tires are going to be so close to stock, and the wheel is so minimally different from stock, i see it as incredibly implausible that you will have any rubbing at all, if so pushing the inner fender forward is like a 5 minute job.

New addition to fitment table?

This thread is intended to be a reference point for all of you that are looking to change tire size. First here are a few links to get you on the right path:
http://www.tirerack.com/ This link will help with selection of tires.
Tire Size Calculator - Compare Tire Sizes This link will confirm below chart data.
Wheel Backspace & Offset - Truck Wheel Sizes - Truckin' Magazine This article will help you understand the concept of wheel offset and backspacing.
Wheel Offset/Backspace Calculator - Calculate/Compare Wheel Offset and Backspace - TyreSizeCalculator.com This is a chart on offset and backspacing.

I have included known data regarding our 5th Gen OEM wheels in the table below. Have fun and happy hunting!
***UPDATE*** Added OEM TE wheel backspacing information

255/60r20 should be added to the fitment table. According to specs on tirerack, looks like it should fit without mods.

I’m strongly considering the wrangler A/T, thinking that if they suck off-road I will pick up some 17” wheels and more aggressive tires for play but still run the wrangler for DD. All stock, new to me 2014 limited. Planning to do 2-3” lift this summer.

Thoughts or suggestions?

I wouldn't run a 20" wheel off road.

Yeah, I understand what you’re saying. “Off-roading” is probably a bit of an over statement for what i truly intend. Thing is, just like so many other things in life, it’s not a clear cut, black and white situation. Extreme fire roads, mebbe - if that’s a thing. And, like i mentioned, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll move on to a more traditional tire and wheel combo.

Also found the tire size i mentioned to be a notable omission from the list.

A 20" wheel with a better tire makes sense in snow, or on gravel roads. There is no hard line between road and off-road... groomed gravel roads are just roads, while forest service roads are a continuum from groomed gravel to bumpy adventure. But for anything where I'd want to air down, for comfort or traction, I'd want a 17" wheel. And the time to sell off the 20" rims would be before you ruin them on rocks.

But back to your tire size - 255/60/20 is a tad smaller than a 275/70/17, so it should be green on the chart. The chart may have been overly conservative, or maybe the size wasn't a thing when the chart was first developed. Either way, good catch.

Just do the math on a tire size comparison calculator and compare whatever size you are looking for, to something known like your OEM tire. Its quite easy to use and gives you the exact size, and comparison of how much bigger or wider or whatever it is.

What about 255/80-17's they weren't on the list

I have a '24 4Runner TRD ORP, it has a 2" level kit on the front, nothing else, wondering if I will have any issues with the 255/80-17's, they are just one size smaller than the stock tires and actually slightly taller than a 285/70-17. I see some folks having issue with stock height with the 285/70's, wondering if going just as tall, but more narrow 255 v 285 and having the 2" level kit will clear me of issues...well at least issues with tire rub?

I can't speak to your specific tire size but it is worth noting lifting independent front suspension does not facilitate clearance for larger tires. At full suspension compression the tire ends up in the same place it would unlifted.
