Going faster then I should

I have a 2002 4Runner that I brought a a year ago and notice I am going way faster then I should. When I go 65 mph I'm going faster then everyone and when I go 60 on a 65, I'm going side by side by the other cars. I recently brought a GPS and the GPS tells m the speed I am going and when I am going 65, the GPS say I am going 72. I sometimes drive at 70 mph, I guess I'm technically going ~75. Is this common for everyone and is it a DIY? I brought the 4Runner $7,400 at 84k miles and now it is 100k.

Do you have the standard tire size? I think its like a 30 inch tall. Or do you have like the micro SR5 wheels for the 2wd?
 
I got a reckless driving ticket the other month for speeding. I have no clue how that's even remotely possible in a 4Runner, but I accomplished it. I got calibrated to lessen the fines, and here were the results. These are based on my 33" tires.
Just an idea of how off your ODO is when bigger:



Outcome, if anyone cares: It got reduced from Reckless Driving to Faulty Equipment, $90 in fines, $400 in a lawyer.

I bought my '97 totally stock and now on 33's it is only off 2mph at highway speed (phone gps says 70mph, speedo says 68).
We have one of those road side solar powered "your speed is" not far from the house - speed limit is 45 and at 45mph indicated that thing says 46.
Gears are stock 4:10

sounds to me you need to get it calibrated. If you're rig is completely stock there is no reason for it to be off that much. Hell, mine isn't even off that much.
 
Im have the 3 stroke wheels with 265/70/R16 but after reading what you guys said and checking the standard tires size which is 225/75/R15 102S. Can that be a reason why it is going faster? How much does it cost to get it calibrated?

I would take your vehicle to the dealership. Some calibration shops are shady as hell and are not ANYWHERE near qualified, in my book, to work on a 4Runner beyond calibration testing. Also, I believe you would have more luck bringing it to your dealership, period.

Just let them look at it, dont mention the word, "diagnosis." They will want to charge you. Good luck. And it's not your tires. Your actual speed and speedo readings are significantly off.

Here on T4R.org, we pride ourselves with being able to help our fellow members with ways of fixing their problems themselves, but I think this is beyond the typical wear and tear scenario. But don't sweat it, this shouldn't be a pricey fix, regardless of dealership prices.

The two infractions are on polar opposites of the spectrum.:confused:

Here in Colorado reckless driving is something like "willfull and flagrant disregard for the safety of others".

I'm just curious - if you would prefer to plead the 5th, I understand. :-)

I know here in California doubling the speed limit or going over 100 is considered reckless driving.
