Hi new to the forum and new some help. We have a 2012 4runner with 14,200 miles. While in park the 4runner started to shake and clatter from the engine then it died all the dash lights came on. Went to start the vech back up and put it in drive nothing no power put it in reverse no power. We called toyota roadside to tow the vech back to the dealership where it sat for a week because we were told the ECM got fried. We get the call today to go pick up our 4runner we start it up drive away happily. About 10miles down the road we pull into a local store put the vech in park and shake and clatter from the engine again, vech dies no power in drive or rev. Called toyota roadside again get the car towed back to the dealership for what seems to be another ECM. They tell us this is the 1st this has happened and i can't find much about 2012 ECM problems only about the brakes and suspension issues. Has anyone had this problem or heard about toyota ECM crapping out. Oh side note the truck is all stock expect tint, bug guard, rain visors, and hardwired passport 8500.

The passport is piggybacked into the acc slot of the fuse panel under the dash. Its been like that since we bought the truck a year ago. I would think if that was the problem the dealership would not have warranted the 1st ecm since dealerships are quick to point out aftermarket add ons.

What codes is the vehicle logging? Ask for the ODBII codes. There is a throttle body TSB the hat handles an issue where the truck will not have any power and be in a "safe" mode just to crawl to the side of the road.

When that happened to my truck it just died though; no weird noises.

Until we have the ODBII codes, there isn't a whole lot we can help with other then add to the speculation.

Okki

i was going to reference someone having that issue and say that it might be the throttle body..

Thanks for your responses. On the r/o they wrote codes p1605 rough idling, code p2111 throttle actuator control system stuck open. remove replace ecm. they inspected the throttle valve for damage and debris found nothing. they used a tech steams to check throttle position 1 and 2 while wiggling the ecm wire harness and the valves did not change and no dec output. they had the tech stream connect started the vech quickly depressed and released the pedal and the check engine light came on and the engine shut off,p2111 was set the flow chart said to replace ecm. That's all we know as of now. As of right now the svc writer has no clue this is the 1st time they are experiencing an ecm problem with the 4runner. I asked if what happens now they said we are going to have a toyota field tech out to look at the vech. Also asked if something else is a concern due to only being able to drive 10miles and the and the vech died, do you think something could be shorting out pre ecm now. Was told we can't rule anything out at this point.
Thanks again for taking your time on reading this and trying to help us out.

I would unplug that radar detector just to rule that portion out. I know its been years since you installed it without problems. But after a 2nd fried ECU the techs just might want to do that anyway..

hardwired passport radar detector... Would start looking there for the problem.

Hopefully not, I've got Passport 8500(s) hardwired into three vehicles, my 2011 LE has been hardwired for two years now, no problems, have one hardwired in my Corvette, (5 years), and my wife's Lexus ES. No problems with any.

With warranty, not one dealer has mentioned anything about it when I bring them in for service.

its not the fact that the radar is in there.. but.. its how the installer wired it.. whether it was wired to somewhere it shouldn't have been.. or if he did a bad job.. so yea.. i have a feeling they are going to want to take it out. (used to work in the shop at toyota)

Thanks, all of mine are hardwired into it's own position at the fuse panel with it's own fuse. Maybe that's why I haven't had any problems, that must make a difference.

well.. wiring something into the fuse panel COULD have messed with something.. i'm not saying IT IS the issue.. i'm saying to RULE IT OUT..

I understand, just making a point that on two of my vehicles, one for 5+ years and one for 2+ years to the panel and all is well. Hope it stays that way.... :eyebrows:

Thanks for the reply's, just heard back from the dealership and they said that toyota tech was on the phone with them for a bit and they believe it to the throttle body actuator getting stuck closed not letting in air in. So we'll going this route for now, as far as the radar detector that seems to not be the case and they aren't worried about it. I'm not sure if this is a common problem with the throttle body but i heard a story about a 2013 tundra going into limp mode due to the throttle body not working properly. I will keep you all posted as to how this parts replacement works. Thanks again.

Good luck, hope they get you straight in no time!! :thumb3:

I just wonder if they ever physically watched the throttle blade open during the test. If it broke inside, the position should still read correctly, but all the shaft is doing is rotating inside the blade assembly.

Sounds like you got a lemon in your possession. If tis happens again, make sure to return the car. I just lemoned by 2012 CLS63 AMG for similar reasons and bought the 13' Trail just to make sure I am getting a quality product. Now hearing this, one word... sucks

Why your dealership didn't look for or know there was a TSB(0092-11) out for 4Runners and FJ's for over a year for for throwing Throttle Body DTC codes is beyond me. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/110178-truck-died-side-road.html#post1005457

OK ,once maybe ,but going to change the ECM twice when it was not the problem and there's no history of bad ECM's on these.

I feel like most techs just plug in the techstream and read the codes then Throw parts at the vech hoping it works. Since unfortunately most cust want their car back yestarday and the techs don't get paid well for Warrenty work. It's all about numbers and the bottom dollar. Hopefully this fixes the truck and we can be on your way. Thanks again for responses.

Mine has been fine since the throttle body was replaced. I'm sure yours will be fine as well.

Okki
