Going to test drive a Taco tomorrow.

Our side business has a need for a little truck so we are going to look a a Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 double cab short box. I've sat in one and it feels slightly bigger than the 4R , most def. higher and has a pretty stout feel to it . I'll interested to see how it drives/rides compared to the 4R .

Possibly get rid of the Escape or the Tahoe for it .

You're going to love it! I have best of both worlds, own a 4th gen and an 05 Tacoma with a 3" lift and 33" Goodyear MTR's.

I think you'll be pleased with it. My first Toyota was a 2000 Tacoma, and if it hadn't been for a manufacturing defect, I'd still be driving it. I was informed last fall, just before winter set in that mine had failed inspection at the dealer. Since I despise shopping for a car in the winter, I didn't have time to be patient and wait for a suitable used Tacoma to appear on the market here (they are rare, there were none available at the time I purchased) I purchased the T4R instead. My first choice would have been another Tacoma.

If you're buying used, take a little time & be sure that it's not affected by the frame rust issue that brought mine to it's premature end.

Cool, let us know what you think. When I took delivery of my 4R back in '07, someone was taking delivery of a silver 4-door Taco with the TRD package. It almost made me second guess the purchase of my 4R...until I hopped in my 4R and started driving away in it.

Not exactly sure about side air bags , reverse back up camera , VSC , ATRAC , limited slip on sports model and rear locker on off road models . I like the sport looks better .

Falls- My brother got an '07 DoubleCab Sport 4x4 and just remember the sport doesn't come with the rear locker, engine skid plate or HAC & DAC or the A-TRAC button among other things...I was so disappointed that a 4x4 wouldn't have the skid plates...he jumped on it cause he liked the hood scoop and 17" wheels but didn't look at the rest of the package....but if thats all u need then awesome, my brother doesn't really off-road so he doesn't care...but if I were to do it I would Def. get the off-road package....

It's a nice truck. Yes, side airbags, VSC , LSD, and TRAC are standard on the 09 Tacoma. The backup camera is an option included in most option packages. ATRAC and rear locker are only available on a TRD Off Road package.

It's the same width as the 4Runner, it rides a tiny bit higher, and it's 18" to 30" longer than the 4Runner depending on the bed. (Most are 18" - the double cab long bed adds another foot overall.)

Tacoma is a great truck. I would also check out the Nissan Frontier, which should be easier to get a bigger discount on.

Or, you can the Dodge PowerWagon, which should be with heavy discounts by now. Or wait till later this year and get the Ford F150 Raptor!

It was a damn nice truck , I really liked it .

I like the look of the sport better than the OR package and the rear locker would be nice , but not a must have with the limited slip and the Atrac , VSC , ect..... looking underneath they looked the same to me . Though I was not really digging into it.

Underneath, both the 4runner and Taco are the same in appearance, but the frame itself is vastly different. Taco has open C-frame at the middle and rear. The 4runner is fully boxed.

LSD is not nearly on the same footing as rear locker...esp, when you take it off-road. IMHO, IF you were to go off-roading frequently over really rough terrain with it, then a rear locker is a MUST have in a vehicle that is available with it.

One thing that still bothers me about the Taco (other than the frame) is that it has rear DRUM BRAKES...and drum brakes on an OFF-ROAD vehicle that relies on brakes to move forward (via ATRAC)...i don't get it. (I did not get it back in 2002 with my 4runner, but it was an old design...so, i partially forgave it.) Drum brakes have their place in the world...in econoboxes that need low maintenance.
