Given that it's a 2wd I would be inclined to pass on the warranty. If you really want it watch the price. Obviously coverage varies etc. but you don't want to have too much money in a 5yr old vehicle. I would think $1.0k would be the high number for me.

Again, they are great vehicles with very few problems and given most of the big $$$ problems involve the t-case actuator, you won't have one:bigok:

Don't know if the Toyota extended warranty would be available on this vehicle. I think it is only good for 100,000 miles or 7years from the date of the original sale. And don't think it would be worth it for only 18,000miles.

The listed price seems high to me. A 2wd 2005, v8 with 82k for $18,000?

Way too high, NADA says clean retail is a little below $16,000. They mentioned they could go down to $16,500 but I'm going to try for $16,000. What do y'all think? I've never done this before
 
If you really want the extended warranty, figure out the highest you're willing to pay for the vehicle w/the warranty before you go to the dealer. Negotiate down to that price w/ the warranty added or walk.

Edit!!! At 90k miles the V8 needs to have some expensive maintenance done. I would try to negotiate the 90k service instead of the extended warranty.

Nevermind I found it. I called the dealership and they said $1,000-$1,500 to change the water pump and timing belt. :wow: I'm definately going to have to talk to them about this and see if we can work out some kind of a deal. When I go to NADA to check out the clean retail value I click on 2WD but then it still says 4WD on the next screen. I did both and the lesser value said clean retail was $19,300. I dont know if I entered it in right. So far I have talked them down to $16,500 and they dont know that I might pay cash for it as opposed to financing it through them. I have never bought a car before from a dealership and dont know the buying tips I wish I did. Any advice would help me a lot. Thanks everyone

Here's the only advice I really have.

It's worth as much as you're willing to pay for it. So if you don't feel comfortable paying a penny over $16,500 and they will only go down to $16,500.01 then just walk.
 
$16,500 sounds better. I paid $18,500 for a 2006 with 58k. I went to Texas Direct Auto - The World's Largest eBay Motors Dealer . I have a contact should you want it. I have to say that was the best car buying experience ever.

Also, DO NOT tell them you are paying cash until the negotiations are done. Most of the time they will go lower in price in hopes that they will get you in financing. If they ask you what you want your payment to be, tell them you are not negotiating payment, but the price of the vehicle. Good luck!

I personally suggest not getting extended warranties, especially on a Toyota. Of the many cars that I've owned, including 6 Toyotas, buying an extended warranty would have been a waste of money. Yes, there is the possibility of some major issue but I think your odds are better that one won't happen; at least one that would cost you more than the cost of the plan. I suggest you put the money for a plan into a CD or soe intrest bearing account. In the event you DO have a problem, you have cash on hand. If you don't have a problem, you have a nice little nest egg for the next car purchase.
 
If you talk to them about the service, they should be willing to throw that in as it doesn't cost them much (mostly labor). I found mine for $13k for an'04 with 94k on it just to give you a ballpark figure to get them to. A dealer will have room to play no matter what they say.

If they won't do the service, leave a card and tell them to call you when they can get to your price (16,500 with service sounds good). They will

I agree with this. $16,500 and the 90K mile service as part of the deal would be as much as I'd go. But I'd still try for $16,000 and the service.

As others said, don't mention you're paying with cash - and there's nothing wrong with not ruling out financing through them during the preliminary talks with the salesman..

Once you've agreed on the price and you get into the little room with the closer, lower the cash boom when they offer the financing. There will be a lot of pressure to buy add-ons - especially if they give it to you for that price with the service. Not sure if they'll do this on a used vehicle, but you may get the whole undercoating, scotchguard, extended warranty pitch. They'll be trying to get more money out of it.....Just say no to all of it.

If what they try to sell you sounds tempting or something you may be interested in buying, make a mental note of it and check the aftermarket prices - you'd be surprised at the dealership markup.

Also, don't be surprised if they try to back out of the agreed on price when they find out you're paying cash...it's happened to me before. If they try that, run, don't walk out....remember - there are a lot of places for you to get a used 4Runner.
