Goldens build

Hi there everyone. I am about to buy another 2nd gen sight unseen for 400$. I'm not really worried about rust cause I live in new Mexico and we don't really rust to bad down here. The guy told me that it ran and drove when parked but engine is "locked" and trany needs work. She's a 1991 idk what engine yet. I'm hoping he's just dumb and it starts after al little work. I will need all the help I can get. I will try and make this my build thread and I hope this new project turns out great, With the help of the yota family.

What I know about truck:
1.1991
2.Gold
3.has factory rear tire swing.
4.its an auto

Will update as soon as I have it.

If motor is 3.0 and locked, consider 3.4 swap depending on smog laws for your area. Manual swap can be done at the same time. It sounds like a lot of work, but having done it, I will NEVER regret it. Went from 3.0/auto to 3.4/manual is night and day. And then of course there's the supercharger.... But that's for another day.

Either way, if you can salvage the 3.0, a lot of guys swear by them, myself excluded. I think they're junk. If it's a 4 banger, you're likely all set then since those would be a workhorse. But I don't think the 4Runner came with 4 cylinder automatics frequently or even at all.

Keep us posted! 2nd gens are great and the swing out is awesome. Only thing I wish mine had was the swing out.

So bad news. The trucks motor is pretty far taken apart. Has all components and he said it runs. The transition however is locked and wont even shift to neutral. Its brown on the inside. I don't know how I like it. I might scrap it and make It a crawler. The person before the owner I bought it from put a 4" body lift and it looks like garbage. There was a knn cold air intake and I swapped it to my silver runner. I would love to just thrash on this truck. It also came with front Toyota brush guard and rear tube bumber. It will take serious money to get this truck running so for now shes getting parked and the savings begin. I got this truck for 400$ so from everything I took off of it I got an alright deal. How much would it be for a 3.4 engine? would it fit stock manual transmission for 91?

Does anyone have ideas on what I should do with her? the body and frame are good.

And if anyone needs anything from it I would be more than happy to help.

3.4 swaps aren't too much money. The cool thing about doing it to a 2nd gen is that you DO use the manual from a 2nd. So yes, a 91 V6 trans will work. It gets a little tricky with wiring and new ECU and some other stuff. If you get serious about 3.4 swap (which again is worth all the work hands down) check out

http://www.offroadsolutions.com/products/category/engine-conversions/5vz-fe-3-4l-v6/

They have a bunch of info and products to help with it. Full list and all that so you know what to expect. But again, I wouldn't waste a dime on the old motor.

My total cost was about $4500 with a used trans getting rebuilt, used motor and paying for a head job (which rebuilding either isn't really necessary). You can do it in pieces so it's not all at once. Took my about 2 years of prepping and buying stuff piece by piece.

I think im just going to build up my 90 with all those parts and slowly start getting parts for engine swap. When I get a little more time I will start my build thread for my 90 3.sl0w

So I am going to build the beast. I will have to save up for engine parts and a Manual tranny. I will add pictures when ever I tow her home. Shes sitting in someone's yard rn. The only bad thing is that she wont shift into neutral and I will have to unbolt the drive shaft just to move it. It might be awhile before I actually get it running and driving but I hope you all are along for the ride as much as I am.

This company also offers a lot of the weird parts at a fair price. Used to offer a full kit but it's been years since I looked.

I bought a super clean 95 with 185k miles. I vowed to get a 3.4L but somehow couldn't resist.
Now I'm debating whether I should hold onto it until it breaks and do 3.4L swap (with a lot of help) or if it's better to sell this 95 and go searching again for a 3rd gen in the 7k range???

That's the big question. It all depends on how much you like the 2nd gen. It's gonna cost you about $4-6K for the whole swap when it's all said and done. Maybe a little cheaper, but people don't factor in allllllll the little things you need. They add up. I have receipts from 8 years ago to prove how much it cost me. And even then, you don't have a rear locker, don't have the "better" front suspension nor any of the other cool bolt on things available that 3rd gens have. I don't regret doing it to mine because I already had fallen in love with mine. But if I could do it all again, I'd probably just save all the money and get a 3rd generation manual with a locker. Hard to find, but also everything is all factory matched.

It's a fair amount of effort for mostly a "cool factor"
When I order replacement parts I have to remember for which "vehicle" I'm ordering even thought it's all one machine Hahahaha

Thanks. I'm not confident doing swap either... so factor in labor and I'd be paying a lot! Plus it's a lot easier to go to a mechanic and ask them to repair a 3.4 then it would be to go to a mechanic and say you want a swap but with a different motor etc

Not sure where you are located but there's a shop in Oregon or Washington that does these swaps. Not sure what they charge but it can't be very cheap. Took me a solid week in my shop to do it all. And that doesn't include all the time later to make other stuff work like AC and little things.

if you decide to sell your truck let me know I would be more than happy to pick it up off you ;) and Honest I feel the same whay. I really want the power and extra reliability but I don't want to risk messing up a perfectly fine truck.

I think you may be referring to these guys:
https://www.toyonlyswaps.com/

I spoke to one of the guys there a while back and he was patient enough to talk to me on the phone about all my concerns about the 3.4 swap into my 92 4runner.

I'd sell you my truck - but I'm in Ca... not sure where you are

I'm 3400 into it. Would need 3000 to stay out of trouble

Shes a beauty. I just got gold runner to my house today. The guy i bought it from said the computer was fried and wouldn't turn on and the transmission was seized but i put a battery in it and it turned right on and went into neutral easy. I hope this guy is just and idiot and i put the engine back together and it starts.
