Gone is the 2008 4Runner acting like a old Chevy heat riser rattle!

Went to Menards to pickup some river rock with the trailer for a downspout project I'm finishing up. While sitting waiting to be checked out I noticed the rattle was getting lot worse uke: then I remembered. It's had this rattle a long time almost since new but never bad enough to worry about till now.

I know it wasn't much just a matter of finding it. So I searched this forum for a couple ideas. Had time today to take a look. Passenger side everything was okay but if I bumped to exhaust I could hear it kind of. Driver side soon as I got under it I found the rattle. There is a 2 piece shield around the driver side catalytic converter on the rear of that shield they installed a mickey mouse (That will Rust) metal clamp which has rusted apart. The shield on the cat was still solid in place but I installed a #36 stainless clamp and all is well. If you do this fix get a good quality clamp and remember what your working with. Get it tight but don't strip it. If you don't get it tight enough it may loosen up on you with the heat cycles.

I am shocked at how many people complain about rattles with these 4runners.

I'm chasing one myself that I can't figure out... thought it was exhaust related but couldn't find anything when we put it on a lift at the exhaust shop. Now I'm thinking it might be something behind the dash, floorboard, or roof...

Do you have a V6? And what year is it? I had no idea anything was being held by such a primitive clamp you are showing.

There is a 2 piece shield around the driver side catalytic converter

I had a problem with the same shield. There was an annoying rattle just at idle speed. I poked around underneath with the engine idling until I happened to press on the shield and the rattle stopped. In my case, the bolts that hold the two halves of the shield together near the front had loosened and were rusted in place. Rather than trying to lie under the truck and cut them off, I just put a large hose clamp around the shield and cinched the two halves together again - no more rattle.
