I found these today at home depot. I bought them for my inner tie rod bellow. I know many folks use zip ties with no problems, but for people looking for a steel replacement, these seem like a good option. They are cheap, narrower than hose clamps, and seem to hold pretty tight. The back side is not completely smooth, but I doubt it would cut the rubber. If you were worried about that you could always wrap something around that part to protect your boot better. I haven't tested the fit yet, but I know they're narrow enough and I imagine you could get longer ones online if you need to.

I haven't tested yet, but I would just pull on the tag end with some pliers, which I imagine would do the trick pretty easily. Since they don't have the notches like zip ties, they back off a very tiny bit before the locking mechanism grabs it.
