Your comment about squeaking more life out of a 5yo battery is ironic considering you're monitoring a voltmeter, of all things, to determine its condition.
I have an old Optima redtop (would never buy a new one now) in a diesel tractor that was given up for dead by a friend because it wouldn't maintain voltage. Ran it through the de-sulfating process and brought it back to life. That was seven years and over 700 operating hours ago.

The challenge is our use of gadgets is getting ahead of battery technology versus cost. Curious if you use a dual battery set up or not. If yes, make sure anything not stock to the car gets wired to the house battery. That should help the starter battery last a bit longer.
As noted AGM is best but your mileage will vary based upon how you drive, weather, how much juice you use, etc.

I hate the store too, but this is a great deal & can be replaced all over the country. Do some Google searches on the reviews.

No irony. The comment was based on your suggestion not mine. That's great you got a free battery for your tractor. Swell. I have no interest in trying to bring an old battery back to life so I can get stuck out in the desert with it. Maybe if I had a tractor that needed a battery and was not my daily driver I would have more interest.

or go in opposite direction and get one off walmart for $48 and replace as needed. I use one for 4 years so far after premature dead of an optima.

I hate the store and everything it stands for so I refuse to spend a dime there. I would rather pay 3 times the cost than contribute to that place.
So I don't.

Forgot to share that I had used a cheap charge controller which ended up being the culprit!
I have Morningstar controllers for small home solar setup (for ham radio) and tried to save a few bucks for the light duty application in the truck. I put in a used 6A Morningstar controller and all is well (after a proper charge). The used MS controller was 3 or 4x the cost of the inexpensive one (that also had nifty USB port etc) but lesson learned.
