Good Deal?

Hello,

I am new to this forum, but I have been looking at buying a 4Runner for a while now. I found this one on craigslist and it seems to be in good condition.

I am going to go look at it tomorrow and was wondering if anyone can tell me if this seems to be a good deal and also if there is anything specific I should look for when I look at it tomorrow.

Thanks!

check for rust around the edges and the undercarriage. Then check the engine and looks for signs on leaking gaskets (fixable). then ask about the transmission and the radiator. and also when test driving just be cognizant of how it shifts. i am not a mechanic and a lot of my knowledge comes from this forum. Those are the places i would start. From looks alone, price is right and it looks sexy. Other members, im sure will chime in shortly and correct me if i am wrong or add on. The mileage is definitely right for my liking!

Certainly priced right as long as there aren't any major issues or rust. I have a '98 with 100K more miles on it I am planning to sell soon for that price.

Thank you! I will be sure to look for the items you stated above and will take your advice in offering 4k cash and see what he says. Hopefully I will own my first 4Runner tomorrow!

I got my 98 back in about 07 w roughly that amount of miles and I paid the same as you. From the looks and all it looks like a pretty good deal, I've seen a few around my parts here in nva w about 200k in decent for the same price.

Just take it for a good test drive, listen, look, and feel all over her for anything out of the norm.

If there's barely any rust on the under carriage it's a good deal!

don't want to get you too excited but if you are driving home a new 4runner you best be letting us see some pics after she is YOURS. again, not to give up hope or get you ahead of the carriage.

Price wise it looks really nice. My advice, get under the truck to check rust. Check for basics related to buying old car and 3rd gen 4runners... such as when the timing belt was changed? check oils and radiator coolant condition etc. check condition of exhaust from exhaust pipe. Test drive it. Run it in 4x4. It's a long list.

One more advice, the person who is selling the car is also very important.

Looks like a fair deal. The mileage and service records on hand are nice, worth checking out for sure,

Michelin tires and JVC stereo alone probably with $1000.00 So the truck is $3000.
Check for frame corrosion

While engine is running around 1500 RPM pull the dipstick and see any visible smoke, oil droplets from the pipe. If neither comes out, engine is good.

I bought it!

Ended up taking it to a dealership to get it looked at. Apparently the front brake calipers are frozen so I will need to get those replaced, and they said the rear main oil seal was leaking. I do not think the leak is that bad because the owner had not noticed a leak at all and has not had to add oil between changes, so hopefully I can drive it for a while without having to replace it. Also the clear coat on the roof has come off so at some point it will need a new paint job on the roof.

I was able to talk him down to 4,250 and felt that this was still a good deal even with the items above that will eventually need to be fixed.

I am now the proud owner of a 98 4Runner!
