Good news for the tranny lag..new tsb fixes!

I brought mine in today for the tranny lag amongst other problems and of course they would not flash it due to my VIN being out of range. They said it is normal and will adjust to my driving habits. They also said dont worry if it blows up because it is under warranty and Toyota pays them very well to fix things like that. That was one of the most outlandish statements I have ever heard a service manager make!!! I have 5k on it now so I wasnt surprised that they didnt want to do anything other than balance my tires for the 3rd time...

Hopefully you did not buy from this dealer and if you did, will never again.

The unfortunate thing is that over the past 5-6 years, this is the 7th vehicle purchased from the same dealer by either me or my immediate family!!! Plus, now my vibration/shimmy is worse than it has ever been since they balanced the tires for the 3rd time. They don't want to hear anything about it being a defective tire or rim...

funny finally remembered to ask the wife if she had any issues with the shifting and she said she had some lag. I was surprised that she hadn't mentioned it before but checked the VIN and I am within the range (funny have 2468 and the recall is up to 2648 so I misread first and thought I had the first model NOT in the recall but double checked)....

Will get this done within the next few weeks and we will see what the result is.

Spoke with the lead tech at the local dealer and he mentioned that adding transmission fluid can sometimes help this lag. The amount is only 4 oz over the spec amount. I know this issue has been addressed as an ECU/signal issue. He said it has to do with speed sensors in the trans having to agree before it will allow for a gear to be selected. By adding a small amount of fluid, additional pressure is created and allows for more consistent sensor inputs and shifting commands due to the added resistance on the gearsets.

Is 4 oz significant enough to cause damage and is this tech's theory plausible?

Sorry if the explanation makes no sense, I'm not a doctor.

Thanks for this. Since there's no tsb for the 4th gen, this may be valuable info.

This may be useless information - as my TE is in the 3000 VIN range, but I can tell a difference in how it shifts and how my wife's 2011 FJ shifts - same engine, same transmission- different programming undoubtedly although FJ is listed with less HP??. The FJ is much more aggressive in response. My 4R does feel more "sloppy" in comparison. It just doesn't respond as fast in any gear. Particularly if you are at speed, say 50ish, and need to pass a chicken truck in a short span. You can gouge it, and it takes a minute to pick up and go. It will go, and go well enough - just doesn't jump out there like the FJ. So far , this is the only thing I "miss" about my '07 v8. It would jump out from under you like a green colt if you weren't careful. I miss that......and the sunglasses holder:cool:

I did do some more semi-serious offroading with it yesterday / today. Black Betty can scratch and crawl with the best of 'em! I love her....:cowboy:

i find my '11 TE is a little rough going from 1st to 2nd under light load, is this related to the TSB in any way....I know mine is new and should not be in the TSB, but still, I am not happy with the transmission performance so far.

I have noticed that if I am driving under 20mph that the shifting from 1 to 2 appears to stutter almost like it is sliding into gear. I dont notice this in other gears or when manually shifting from 1 to 2. Anyone else experiencing this? It is a 2011 SR5

I traded a 2010 FJ for the 2011 4R TE. Loved the FJ, but hard with kids in the back..

But, I had this lag in the FJ, but none in the TE -- it drove me nuts in the FJ. The timing was off, both on acceleration and braking. Not sure if the TSB would have solved this, but hope I do not run into this with the TE. So far, I love the the TE - I should have bought it in the first place..

this is exactly what i'm talking about.

tranny slip

thanks yondermountain! i bought mine on 12/13/2009 and have experienced the lag at times. hope it works, i'll let you all know....

Hi S&S: I'm curious to know if you have taken your 4/R to the dealership as yet, and if so what were the results? I was told that the '10' in the TSB meant that it was for 2010 vehicles. I bought mine only a month before you did, however it is an 2009.
Thx...

If yours is a 5th gen it IS a 10', does not matter if you bought it in 09' like I did in November.

Hi westwind: Thank you for your reply. Sorry to show my ignorance, but what constitutes a 5th generation?...so you say you bought your 4/R in November '09, and is it then a 5th generation? Also have you taken your 4/R to the dealership and had it 'fixed' and if so what is your opinion.
Thx

5th Generation is the new body style, which would have been available late 2009. If you bought a 2009 model year in 2009, then you'd have a 4th Gen. However, if you bought a 2010 model year in late 2009 you'd have a 5th gen.
If your 4runner looks like this it's a 5th Gen:

And if it looks like this it's a 4th Gen:

I had the fix, it was night and day, big difference, the way it should be now! When I took it in they had no clue of the TSB (but that was a while ago) so if you go bring the number just to be safe.

Hi Westwind: Thank you so much for your illuminating answer. It appears I do not qualify as I have an '09/4th generation. I bought this 4/R (my first Toyota) believing the company line of reliability and dependability and have been sorely disappointed. Its interesting that the company chooses to fix only the 5th generation. But then of course why bother to fix a model that is no longer in production...follow the money.
Thanks again

Have you taken it to a dealer yet to be looked at?

Have you researched this problem in the 4th gen board on this forum?

If Toyota found an issue they 'would' issue a fix for it. Take it into the dealer, let them know what you found.

Also, I believe the sales #'s for the 09' were VERY low, so this problem you are having might not be getting the attention it deserves because of that. The amount of people complaining about it might not be enough to trigger their attention yet.

Had my '10 SR5 in today and the service tech was clueless about the TSB. I should have known not to even bring it up after he asked me how to cycle the digital gauge to find my miles, he had no idea even though the little push rod has been on vehicles since the 80's. I told him about the issue and the TSB number and he told me that the low speed lag was normal for the fly by wire transmission and that the TSB's are issued just so techs can more easily diagnose problems with the car...waste of time. I'll try the service manager next time.

Some people seem to be having different 'issues' or describing them differently at least. Mine never had the 'lag', if I hit the gas after making a turn (left or right on a side street around 10-20mph) the engine would rev up (no lag) but the 4R would not go anywhere, the system felt confused like it could not figure out what gear it wanted to be in so it picked NONE! I would have to feather the gas for it to finally pick a gear, was very annoying. When I brought it in they had to look up the TSB I gave them as there were unaware of it as well, but on my service sheet it says the tech drove it, noticed the same problem, and reflashed the system. It was like driving a whole new machine after the fix!

I drive a couple of Ford's (04' / 06' F-150's) now those things have horrible lags due to the fly by wire system. I can push both to the floor and release and the rpms will not even budge unless I hold it. My 4R responds like a sports car compared to those two!
