Good news for the tranny lag..new tsb fixes!

Have you taken it to a dealer yet to be looked at?

Have you researched this problem in the 4th gen board on this forum?

If Toyota found an issue they 'would' issue a fix for it. Take it into the dealer, let them know what you found.

Also, I believe the sales #'s for the 09' were VERY low, so this problem you are having might not be getting the attention it deserves because of that. The amount of people complaining about it might not be enough to trigger their attention yet.

I don't want to sound too cynical, but again follow the money. The 5th generation was a body style change but I doubt Toyota spent money to redesign and change the running gear. And that is proven out if the '09 and '10's both have the same problems. That said it is way cheaper for Toyota to address the new models only, as they are the ones being sold now.
And yes I have had the 4/R to two dealerships, with comments ranging from 'we have not heard anything about this' to 'Toyota does not consider this a problem' and 'don't believe everything you read on those blogs'...
Thanks so much for you help and I'll check out the 4th generation board.
best regards

Umm, totally different engines, part time 4WD on two models and a different Torsen on the Limited... the 2010 did "change the running gear". How about researching your facts before spreading paranoid BS on the boards.

I made it up ;):

Actually, I gathered that from the endless discussions about why the 4th Gen is better than the 5th, but I'll see if I can find the actual post/discussion.

OK.

No, the transfer case is the same VF4BM as in the 4th gen V8 4WD. There is an operational difference where low range, unlocked is unavailable in the 5th gen LE. Who knows why. Perhaps to eliminate the cost of an additional acuator or something.

So it's not identical, but still the same unit. That is still only one piece out of the drive train.

Some people seem to be having different 'issues' or describing them differently at least. Mine never had the 'lag', if I hit the gas after making a turn (left or right on a side street around 10-20mph) the engine would rev up (no lag) but the 4R would not go anywhere, the system felt confused like it could not figure out what gear it wanted to be in so it picked NONE! I would have to feather the gas for it to finally pick a gear, was very annoying. When I brought it in they had to look up the TSB I gave them as there were unaware of it as well, but on my service sheet it says the tech drove it, noticed the same problem, and reflashed the system. It was like driving a whole new machine after the fix!

I drive a couple of Ford's (04' / 06' F-150's) now those things have horrible lags due to the fly by wire system. I can push both to the floor and release and the rpms will not even budge unless I hold it. My 4R responds like a sports car compared to those two!

Thanks for this very clarifying post.

To me that is "lag" because the engine power is not making it to the back wheels without some delay. What you are describing on the Fords would be "throttle lag" to me.

Yeah, yeah, yeah :p I do see you point though. I remember some people were complaining about 'throttle lag' hoping this TSB would fix it, but for me I never had 'throttle lag'.

Here is one thread on the 4th Gens discussing it. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/68581-tsb-tranny-lag-apply-4th-gen.html

It's the software programmed into each model for the ATC(Adaptive Transmission Control) systems that people complain about.
The Adaptive Transmission Control system commonly called a "Learning"transmission recognizes individual styles of driving (e.g., aggressive vs. Relaxed) and adapts transmission shift parameters accordingly.

The software for the 5th Gens ECM is different then the 4ths but the A750E(2wd) and the A750F(4wd) are the same transmissions used in the both. The ECM won't allow 5th Gen software to be flashed on to a 4th Gen. though.
The same Torsen T3 center diff that was used in the 4th Gens is used in the Limited 4x4's but the part time transfer of the SR5/TE is new to 4Runners.On the Limiteds , still trying to figure out if the 4L unlocked is a software change or a mechanical change in the Torsen's for the 5ths.

I noticed a lag in the first 1000 miles of mine when I was taking it easy during break-in. After that I reset the ECM(took the neg battery cable loose overnight)and started driving my normal lead footed style the shift points became alot more crisp and not near the lag between shifts. Although it still has that hesitation when I'm going R to D like when backing out of a parking space but that's probably programmed in to protect it.Nothing harder on a tranny then going from R to D without coming to a complete stop.

It's not the trannies. The A750 transmissions are practically bulletproof and are used in almost all of Toyota's trucks including LC's ,Lexus's and Prado's since 2003 and are one of the most reliable trannies in the world. They are in +500hp/660ft/lb factory TRD supercharged 5.7L Tundras so they can hold anything a 4Runner can throw at them.Toyota doesn't make the transmissions, another Japanese company named Aisen-Warner makes them for them and there are literally millions of them around the world being flogged daily in Toyota trucks.

Here's some tech info on A750's for people ,like me, that are into that sort of thing. It's from a Tundra but 4runners use the same ones. Toyota A750E and A750F Transmission Tech Info

I know this is an old thread. I want to check if this is still an issue for some people.

I brought mine (2010 SR5) to a nearby dealership few months ago. A technician test drove it and said he could not find anything wrong. He refused to reflash ECU sine my ECU software was already up to date.

I lived with this problem for the past two years and recently I noticed the lap issued has been improved a lot. I wonder if this is the same to others. It seems a lot less people complain this issue compared to two years ago.

Did you give them this information?

T-SB-0166-10 6/29/10

Some vehicles may exhibit a harsh shift on acceleration below 20 mph during the 2-1 downshift on vehicles equipped with an A750 transmission. The Engine Control Module/ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration has been revised. Use the following repair procedure to address this condition.

This TSB applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below:

2WD JTEZU5JR#A5001122
4WD JTEBU5JR#A5002648
This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty, which is 96 months or 80,000 miles.

My VIN is over 6000 and they also said my ECU had the latest version of
software.

BTW do you have the complete PDF for this TBS that contains the previous and revised calibration IDs? I may go to another dealership to let them show me the current ID. Thanks!
