whats nice is when you buy the fortin, they give you a key to log on there website, and that give you full pics on where each wire is needed for install.
also if you want to do drone add on later to use your phone instead of the remotes, you can buy the module and pay a yearly subscription for unlimited range.
3000ft is plenty, i am still using the older series from 2008 and the range is fine for the 3000ft system i have. people are still amazed i start my truck up few blocks away.

Forgive my ignorance on these systems, but I saw “drone” mentioned a few times in this thread, but without context to figure out what that meant. This post leads me to think that term just means substitution of your cell in place of the normal remote, is this correct?

yes.
even if you get the basic system, just make sure its drone compatible, always carry a remote, incase you dont have cell signal, you can still have a way to unlock your car.
you can use the 7000as for alarm and remote start, 7200 which is just remote start only, but with that you can also buy some extra to turn it back to a alarm system also. with those system you will need to buy the remotes seperately, but they can use any compatible remote from compustar.

Awesome, thanks. My truck came with some sort of alarm previously installed, but there was no remote included with it, which makes me think it once had remote starting too, as it has a little antenna in the upper corner of the windshield. There is also a small micro switch down on the lower trim panel just inside the door. I figure that was a car jack switch or something? It also has a sticker on the door window that says “protected by Auto Mate”. Don’t know anything about the system, but judging by the pamphlet I found in the glovebox, it appears to have been installed when the truck was new, possibly by the dealer. I haven’t taken all the panels off, but it appears that the harnesses and maybe module are still in place. Not sure if it was somehow disabled though.

the switch is the valet switch which act as remote programing and also enable or disable the alarm or remote start.
if you want to remove that hole thing and install new, just note where each wire is going.

Hey...so does this give the option of it just unlocking when you walk up to the car and lock when walk away or no? Also, any place you would recommend near ya (I'm on the other side of the hill in Tri-Valley) for install?

Thank you. I wonder if it would be possible to program a new remote to work with the existing system. I’ve never messed with that button because I was afraid that it could disable the start, or something that I wouldn’t be able to fix.

you can also do that keypad too.
installer wise, you can come down here in oakland and stop at audiomobile in china town. they did my alarm and its still working, im going to try and do my upgrade later on. but having the shop do it is worth it for the warranty.
you can also make the rear window go up or down, but its additional wiring must be done. there is a thread about that somewhere here, but you need to change some settings in the brain.

i would look for the brain and see what is compatible for the remote part. looks like they are part of dei so you have alot of the same choices. thats why compustar is way better, more selection. the dei is all the same stuff, when i bought my new subs, he was trying to sell me dei alarms, i told him they dont have the range and selection like compustar and he agrees.

This thread has a lot of information that is true and not true with regards to compustar systems. It is best to talk to a knowledgeable Compustar dealer.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. If the brain is still wired in, and it’s reasonable for a remote, I may try it, otherwise just go with a newer unit like Compustar that you mentioned. I’ll have to pull some dash panels and see if I can find it when I have time.

I don't have a remote start, but I will lurk on slickdeals.net and this deal is getting a lot of attention. Best Buy has a this 2-way compustar with install included on sale.

ill pass on that, but having the alarm functions is only a few more wires that need to be connected.
sure you guys can just do remote start. leave the ac on during hot days and heater on the cold days. its handy.
the good thing about the new stuff is that you dont need to have external bypass , everything can be programmed to the brain.
check out some videos from lockdown security, it might give you guys some info on what brain can do what.

Haven't been able to find info in any other threads - does anyone know if 2018 4Runners already have anti-grind function? Getting a remote starter installed in a couple weeks and asked them to include the anti-grind function and he said some newer models already have it. Want to know if that's true before I pay for an additional feature I don't need.

Your 5th gen doesn't have anti grind from the factory but why is it suck a necessity for you. Read my signature below. Email me and you get answers.

No, but when you do your install you should document it for the rest of us poor souls who didn't have the courage to do it ourselves without guidance. I sent mine back as I could not find a local shop who was willing to install it for me. Good luck.
