Goodyear wrangler duratrac vs Hankook dynapro my

So this is my first time creating a thread but I have been on this forum frequently for the past year so I know how things work around here. One thing I have found is people are very "sensitive" to useless/redundant posts, so I will try to keep my posts as content filled as possible and keep the questions to a minimum.

People on this forum seem to love the Goodyear wrangler duratrac's for their on/off-road performance, low weight, performance in winter, and being load range D in 285/70r17. The GY's are great tired but where is all the love for the Hankook dynapro MT's? These tires also have good on/off-road performance, are also low weight, have the snowflake rating, and are load range D in 285/70r17. Plus they don't have the same weak sidewalks that everyone complains about on the GY's, they are a heck of a lot cheaper, and I think they look really cool, yet I've only seen a few 5th gens with them. Please put opinions on this topic as well as reviews on both tires (there are reviews of the GY's everywhere so more looking for reviews on the hankook's)

A quick google search shows the dynapros to be ~$220 and 54lbs while the duratrac's are something like $270 and 53lbs.

Looking at the Hankook website the mt does not have the snowflake rating, the dynapro at does but is not in the same league as the GY duratrac

This is a pretty tough question to answer. I have found that tire preferences are on the same level as religion and politics on the forums. I have run both granted not on the same vehicle. Hands down the GY is a better tire in wet icy and snowy conditions. Off road they are similar but I still lean towards the GY. I have never had any issues with the sidewalls and I never really found anything much posted as far as actual issues about it either. As far as cost goes I haven't seen more than about $30 a tire difference which is worth it to me.

Bottom line if you like them run them. Your own experience and review will help others make a good decision

Basically your hankooks are MTs and the Goodyears are not. It apples and oranges. A comparison between these and other MTs would be more valid. It's also safe to say you will get better quality control with the Goodyears, but that does not necessarily make hankooks bad.

I've had both on my FJ. Duratracs are pretty awesome, I've driven through whiteout conditions and up steep, slippery grades with no problem while watching other SUV's literally spin and fail. The downside if you can call it that, they look like service truck tires which is kind of their intent. The Hankook MT03 look great but I found their sidewall to be on the soft side with surprising sidewall flex that's fine for low pressure crawl control but a bit too disconcerting cornering on the streets. If I had to choose between the two, the Duratracs.

Interesting, so you think your the duratrac's have a little stiffer side wall? Sp then did you feel more body roll in corners with the hankook's?

I know the hankook's are mud tires and the duratrac's are not but they similar in weight and the hankook's get really good reviews on other sites. The hankook's actually won the mid tire showdown on fourwheeler.com Mud Tire Shootout First Place: Hankook Dynapro MT , keep in mind that this comparison was done in 2011 so that may factor in some. I don't run into too much mud but I do live in Texas so it is a consideration. I know the hankook's do really good in mud (it's expected they are MT's) but how well do the GY's clean?

For what it's worth I'll share my experience with the Goodyears.

I had "D" rated 285/70/17 Duratrac's on my 13" TE. I loved the traction in snow and off road but I started having significant vibrations on the highway that would start at around 60 mph.

Purchased from America's Tire and over the course of 6 months I had them rotate, balance, and re-balance multiple times including with the Road Force machine. They kept telling me that the tires were in balance and non of them were out-of-round. They blamed my non-stock wheels, my lift, blah blah...

I have a Toytec Ultimate lift with TC UCA's and SCS Stealth 6 wheels. Alignment checked and double checked and the numbers were good.

I was in that store enough that they were sick of me and I was fed up with their inability to get the tires to balance. Finally, I contacted their corporate office and got them swap with BFG KO2's in the same size... The BFG's are definitely a less aggressive tire with smaller lugs but the truck is now smooth as glass on the highway after the tire swap.

I know others who have had good experiences with the Duratracs and I've read on this forum that some suspect the E-rated versions are better. Anyway, I really wanted to like them as i thought they looked great and had amazing traction but in the end I just couldn't live with them.

I had the E rated Duratracs so definitely felt stiffer. With the Hankook MT03's it wasn't body roll that I felt but the softness of the sidewall on turns at speed, felt soft enough that I had to wonder (not seriously) if the bead was gonna pop off the rim. I went from Duratracs straight to MT03's so any immediate differences were magnified, if going from stock AT to MT03 it may not have been so noticeable.

I had the Hankook RT03's in 265/70R17 load range E on a 2003 Ram with Cummins diesel. I ran maybe 6 or 7 different tires on that truck because I wore them out towing. The Hankooks wore more quickly than the other tires I ran, which were a variety of AT's and HT's, and would be expected from a MT. They never gave me a handling issue and I pulled a ~5-9,000 lb. trailer through all conditions. With or without a trailer, I hardly used 4wd and never had an issue in the snow.

I was on the edge of getting them for my 4Runner, but am taking a 6,000+ mile road trip with the family and wanted to use a tire that I though would be more likely to be quiet on road but still be a good dirt road tire. That's not saying they were loud, but they weren't quiet either.

I'm at 4 years with my Duratracs. Loved them, & they still have good tread after 60K miles! I guess I'm easier on them than most. Torn between another set, or trying out the BFG's. Leaning towards the BFG for something different & to experience them on the 4R, with America's Tire giving me 30 days to decide to keep, or swap for a new set of Duratracs. Yeah, that's probably what I'll do.
