GOP Presidential Candidates

Anybody keeping up with the GOP debates? I wouldn't mind hearing some other people's views of the four current candidates.

We're voting tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I know who I'm going to vote for, but I'm always up to read some intellectual posts about politics.

I am trying to keep up with the GOP debates. Here are my views:

Romney- too moderate- not really a fan of what he did in Mass
Gingrich- too many skeletons and not a big fan
Ron Paul- is he really running on the Republican ticket? Way too radical, kind of scary
Rick Santorum- Like his conservative views- he would be my choice.

Interested to hear what other people think...

Not a bad view, other than the fact that Ron Paul is not scary, and he's only seems radical because our country is so radically messed up. Get far enough away from any given point...and it seems radical. But if the point you are currently residing at is a radical one.....then, well...you need a radical change to get where you need to go.

Let me preface by saying there are three kinds of lies: White lies, damn lies and statistics. Statistics can show that Paul has a better chance to beat Obama in a general election than any other GOP candidate right now.

The man in extremely smart. Everything he gets slammed on has to do with people not understanding how it will actually work. When he says we need to cut x amount of federal government out...he means it. But he's not stupid enough to think you can just do that kind of stuff overnight....like everyone who is freaking out seems to think. It takes time and it's a process. But it's a process that will save our country from complete financial collapse. If you're ok with living out your life but letting your kids and grandkids live in a country/world that looks like modern day afghanistan....go ahead and kick the can down the road. It will happen if nothing is changed.

I can't be the only one who is shocked by how repulsive most of these candidates are.

I don't understand why there are no moderates running. With all the businessmen America has why are there no Bill Gates like figures willing to run?

This is exactly what mainstream media spews everyday. You do have a choice....and those two options are NOT them.

This is Ron Paul's biggest challenge. You can't win without at least part of the "mainstream media" getting behind you and speaking positive of you. Ron ONLY gets support from the left of center media, mostly due to his position on legalization of recreational drugs. However this, and his very un-Republican position on "demilitarization" and huge down sizing of the defense department have most on the right pigeon hole him as a radical.

About 4 years ago Ron Paul wins the first Fox News Republican debate, by a long shot, both on stage and in a Fox news poll and you have Fox news talking heads call him a nut and saying that their own poll was crap.

Let me be very clear Fox news and other right leaning mainstream media will not only not support Dr. Paul, but they will do everything possible to prevent his nomination, and its been like this for a decade now.

There are lots of what Dr. Paul says that I like, I like ending the war on drugs, and I like the idea of bringing all of our soldiers home and dramatically reducing the cost of our military. I don't like his position on returning to the gold standard which basically transfers our monetary policy from the Fed to countries who produce most of the gold, like China, South Africa, and Russia. We can see what happened in Europe when you lose control over your currency.

Regardless of all of that, Dr. Paul needs to recognize that he will never get any love from the right. If he wants to run he should consider running as an independent.

Ron Paul's position on the military is scary. He wants to give up all our military bases overseas. Once we loose our presence in certain strategic countries we won't get that real estate back. He is an isolationist and that is very dangerous.

The way Newt often twists his mouth indicates when he is telling a lie or being deceptive. Watch him if you don't believe me.

I don't really like Romney because he seems a little corrupt. Seems as if he'd switch his stance on any issue for the right amount of money or power.

I think I'll be voting for Paul. I don't agree with all of his ideas, but I think we need some drastic changes. He is definitely the smartest candidate and knows a ton about the Constitution.

I don't like how much he wants to cut the military, but I do think that it needs to be cut a good bit.

I wouldn't be so fast to assume that. I don't care who gets picked to represent the GOP, I will vote for them. Anything but Obama.

I think quite a few other people feel that way also.

GOP Candidates


Newt? Enough baggage to open a Samsonite store & a closet progressive. He may be the smartest chap in the room, but has been part of the 'establishment' for way too long, has neocon beliefs and will still end up growing government - even if at a slower pace than Obama. Newt would eat Obama alive in a debate, but most of it would probably go over the head of most voters because form is more important than substance nowadays.

Romney? Obama Lite - also known as Obomney in some circles. Good businessman, great hair, good speaking voice and a decent amount of charisma. Still, though, a 'big government' Republican in his heart, more "establishment" than Newt, laid the foundation (in MA) for Obamacare and is not a supporter of our Second Amendendment. If he gets the GOP nod to run against Obama, it will truly be the proverbial lesser of two evils contest.

Santorum? Are you freaking kidding me? He's a theocratic nut-job who thinks the government should be the "moral police" of society. This chump is frightened by the idea that someone, somewhere just might be having a good time. He may be a 'nice guy' who reminds you of a kind uncle or polite neighbor....but don't let that facade fool you. He's a snake in the grass type of authoritarian who is power-hungry and WILL increase the size, scope and cost of government (especially at the federal level). Rick Santorum is certainly no conservative, especially on fiscal matters.

Rick Perry? Thankfully, he is out of the race. He makes Joe Biden actually look intelligent. Let him go back to Texas where he was a better than average governor. He's not exactly a big fan of the US Constitution, although he still would have been preferable to Obama any day of the week.

Ron Paul? The ONLY conservative in the race. Perfect? Heck no. His foreign policy (or lack thereof) is a bit unnerving; but I LOVE his respect of, admiration for and understanding of the US Constitution. I know that federalism, limited government, the Bill of Rights and fiscal restraint are now somehow considered "extreme" or "wacko" ideas -- but Dr. Paul is the sole adherent to the philosophy of limited government. He is the only candidate who will actually seek to SHRINK GOVERNMENT - rather than merely slowing its rate of growth. He is also pro-Second Amendment; much more so than any of the rest on the docket.

Could he beat Obama in the general election? I am not sure. Is it more important for the GOP to nominate a "milquetoast, wannabe conservative" who will win and only be slightly less bad than Obama or to truly put forth the best & most principled man with the likelihood he will lose to Obama in November? Truly a dilemma, I think. With 300,000,000+ people in this great nation, you would think we could come up with some better choices. Sheesh!

Obama hasn't done ANYTHING to limit access to guns. There has been no ban of any kind.

F&F did not limit are inhibit in any way, your ability to buy the same exact amount of guns you could have 4 years ago.

The way I see it is this: ever since 2008 many many conservatives and media corporations have been warning about the upcoming ban on guns under Obama. This has resulted in a massive increase in the price of guns and ammo since 2008. Each manufacturor has a financial incentive to keep scare going.

Meanwhile since 2008 there has never been a bill through the democratically controlled Senate that would take away anyones ability to buy guns. And Obama surely won't pursue it during the election cycle.

This is basic economics and the results of market manipulation. Remember that next time you shell out out $$$$$$$ for a box of ammo.

2nd Amendment


While Obama has not come out loudly against the Second Amendment, what were his votes on it when he was a legislator? Did he vote for "gun control" schemes in Illinois, either as a state representative or as member of the US Senate?

Who did he choose for the SCOTUS? Sotomayor (sp?)? Kagan? Both of them are HOSTILE to the Second Amendment and definitely would have voted against us in the Heller v DC decision from 2008. As it was, it was a 5-4 verdict in favor of freedom. It should have been nine to zero!

Had the two of them been on the bench back then, the court would have ruled unfavorably.

The next POTUS will likely get the chance to nominate two more justices during the next four years.....and we know that Obama will want more leftist, statist, anti-freedom, anti-constitution people on the bench.

P.S. The way they did "Fast & Furious" was dangerous. Give guns to Mexican thugs and then see where they end up after crimes are committed. What is next, giving bomb-making material to suspected al Qaeda terrorists and see where they kill people by using explosives or a dirty bomb?
