got insulted!

From what I see, you can get 4WD with or without a 2-speed transfer case. You would still get transfer case but it would not be 2-speed. I may not be seeing this right but by looking at the option list I linked, it looks like the 2-speed is optional with 4WD. Why would they even list the 2-speed transfer case as an option for 4WD if it was part of or standard with 4WD?

Koz

This is incorrect. The 2-speed transfer case is on 4wd models only...that is what is meant by the small notation under that option. It is "optional" because not every Xterra is 4x4.

Koz, think about this a bit...how can Xterra be 4wd WITHOUT a transfer case?? This is impossible...otherwise it would be AWD (like RAV4, Highlander, etc.). There is no such vehicle on the planet that comes 2wd, AWD, and 4wd configurations. Just spend a few seconds to BUILD ONE on the Nissanusa.com website. Please. There is no optional transfer case checkbox when you select Off-road Package and 4x4!!!!!

Well, i am exhausted....

This thread is getting weirder by the seconds...

Unlike V6 vs. V8 thread, I think we can all agree that Land Rovers Suck big time! Let's leave it at that. No need to talk about Nissan or some rock star cuz that's really for another thread...

Thai what I think KOZ is trying to point out is you may be able to get a 4X4 with ONLY 4HI, a single speed transfer case. 2-Speed transfercase = 4Hi and 4Lo. But I also see your point about the lack of a optional transfercase. The "2-Speed" transfercase is optional and that would make it a 4X4.

Dodge did use a 1 Speed tranfer case from 1940-1945 in the VC, WC, 1/2&3/4 ton trucks, a military application I believe. It was made by New Process and is a single speed, gear drive, cast iron case. They do exist.

All of this talk about what vehicle is the best performing offroad vehicle is a load of crap. Who cares what vehicles comes with what options etc because 99% of them won't even see the trails anyway. I will say this much regarding this topic: I respect ANYONE that takes their vehicle out on the trails REGARDLESS of brand. Those that truly love the sport will make it happen by modifying their vehicles accordingly. Remember we all share the same trails at one point or another so bashing eachother gets nowhere but lots of headache.

People that are hung up on "well my vehicle is better than yours because of this and that" needs to grow up.

I DON"T agree that Land Rover's suck. In fact, I believe the exact opposite.

People need to realize that there was a time when "the sun never set on the British Empire." For decades before many of us here were even born, Land Rover was building vehicles that set the world-standard for off-road ability for decades to come. These vehicles were put into extensive use on nearly every continent on the globe, in places that had no trace of what we would call a "road."

Comments that imply that Rovers are just fancy street cruisers have no basis in fact. That would be like a Honda S2000 or Acura NSX owner saying that Ferrari or Porsche don't know anything about building real sports cars. In fact, the opposite is true.

For those who maintain that Rovers do not belong on the trail, I would suggest checking into the history of this company, which NEVER built anything other than off-road capable 4WD vehicles (albeit the Freelander was their worst endeavor). This is something no other company can say.

I do, however, accept as fact that their reliability is crap and can not compare to a Toyota 4Runner.

:iagree:

Consumers tend to buy what they "think" is best for them. Luckily for us, we all know that the 4Runner is the best in its class. :D

Good Times, I love your truck! Everyone who raves about my 4Runner, I tell them it's like any other one out there. Check out the Chaos Edition one.

hmm I have owned 2 Land Rover Discoverys and one 4runner and done serious off road with all.

Currently I have a 2004 Discovery which is by far the best Rover for off road and comfort, defender is only better at entry/exit angles and Range is best luxery

Land Rovers are more comfortable and better looking imo but forget it, insurance and mechanically they don't come close to yotas. Not to mention, if you have ever been to a Land Rover forum, they are all linear minded, inarticulate, smug, and great at flaming internet users why? Because they have to take the anger of what's currently wrong with their vehicle out on someone right!

However, Land Rover made some really nice vehicles but peace of mind and the Toyota ergonomics is really coming into its own.

By the way the Free Lander is a joke. It is bad on road much less off road and your 4 Runner, or ANY 4runner can run circles around it in every way

The Free Lander is to Land Rover what the Porsche 914 is to Porsche = zilch - tell him he shoulda gotten a real Rover if he wanted one! Free Lander is built poorly, drives poorly, stays together poorly, and will have the longevity of a virgins you know what the first time around

take a drive over to Discoweb.org and see what wanks people are there as opposed to how fun, friendly, excited, and nice people are here. Then notice how every post is about something going WRONG

if that doesn't convince you not to buy a Rover you need a really beautiful wife/girlfriend to keep the smile on your face and live with in walking distance to the dealership. By the way, my current Rover has been really good to me but the chance of me keeping it (40K miles) is about as slim as Kate Moss, but the chance of me keeping an '06 Limited is as good as Apple Pie
:D
