i was able to use my friend's all wheel drive dyno.. my truck is a 2003 V8 and is all stock.. it made 191 RWHP and 253 RWTQ:bouncy2:.. in between pulls, i swapped out a K&N replacement filter.. surprisingly, it made no difference.:(

here's some pics:biggrin2:

Wow, you have about 25% parasitic loss from the drivetrain.

I wonder if the full-time 4-wheel drive causes so much loss.

Most cars typically lose 15-18% on the dyno.

It is actually 18.7% loss which is very good for an auto. Most auto lose about 20%. Manualls are around 18%.

235 hp stock at flywheel. 191 on dyno, 44 hp loss or 18.7%.

Very cool. Good to know.

Thanks for pics and would love to see a graph.

Just for Comparision.

Here are 2 Dyno Charts from the K&N website. One for the V-6 and V-8. They listed the V-8 as a 4.7L V-6????? The stock HP number is very close to yours. At least it is consistent. I just wish they would provide TRQ numbers. I will send them an email and see if they can provide those numbers too. I would like to see a dyno run for a 05 or 06 V-8.

Here is the V-8 Chart:

Here is the V-6 Dyno Chart

199.3 HP in Stock form. The parasitic loss comes out to exactly 18.7% for the V-6 also. 245 Flywheel - 199.3 Rearwheel.

The V8 has 235 HP? I was thinking it was rated higher than that.

That info is correct for the 2003-2004 V8. In 2K5 the V8 received VVTI and the HP Torque was bumped up to 270HP and 330LB torque. I think I'm pretty close on the VVTI numbers but someone correct me if i'm wrong...

So you replaced the stock air filter with a K&N and it made no difference? Interesting, Very Interesting....

yea.. no difference w/ the K&N:( it was just a drop in filter (33-2144) .. not the whole system.

here's the dyno sheet..

Doesn't surprize me at all.....stock Toyota filters aren't particularily restrictive, and in the stock airbox a replacement filter could only make an insignifigant increase.

Provided your stock filter is clean, it's really not giving up any flow to anything else on the market....and definetly filter as good, or better, than aftermarket filters.

I would love to put my 05 4Runner on the Dyno but where I live, I can't find a 4 Wheel Dyno to do the job.

How about some of us with 05's putting up a fund to have someone with an 05 to slap their rig on the Dyno? I would love to know what the numbers are like.

Cheers,

Had to respond because I think I will be dyno'ing my 05 soon. My buddy has an 04 silverado w/ a 3 core intercooled ATI procharger and other goodies and he will be going to the dyno shop that helped tune his truck soon. Said I could use one of his three pulls so...if I do, I will be sure to post my results!

I found these dyno results interesting because some auto enthusiasts (not so much 4Runner people) swear by the K&N filters and how they increase horsepower/performance by a number someone usually pulls out of thin air. I run into this a lot in the Volkswagen community where the younger folks have been literally brainwashed that K&N filters are the end-all be-all when it comes to cheap horsepower bumps. In every single discussion I have ever had with these young people not one of them had ever dynoed their VWs(before/after a K&N install) and could prove their claims (and K&N's) that the filters made a difference.

When it comes to the benefits of K&N filters I am a "Show Me" (your dyno results) kinda guy.

I had K&N filters in everyone of my car until recently when I was reading a thread on aftermarket air filters. There was a post, in this forum I believed, with a number of sites for references about how a clean factory air filter actually out perform after market so call high flow filter as far as flow rate and air cleaning capacity. So I did some research myself and found that most independent research had the same results. The only result that was in the aftermarket air filter manufacturer's favor was provided by the manufacturer themself. My conclusion is that I will change the OEM air filter every 10000 miles and get maximium flow and protection from the OEM filter.

The most over rated system has got to the be the FIPK. The Tundra boys hate them over on Tundra Solutions. Just makes you feel as if there is more power from the noise.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but unless someone has the FIPK how can they be qualified to even make that statement. There seems to be a lot of people bashing them that don't own them. I have not seen where anyone took it off after they got it.

Here is an example:

I have the FIPK and it does improve mileage and with that a small power increase. For $250 you get about a 9.3 RWHP increase. That is about $27/RWHP. I would like to see these corrected to Flywheel values like the unichip chart below. It may be more like 11BHP. 9.3+18.7%=11.04BHP. 18.7%=Driveline loss. Which would make it even more of a value. $23/BHP

Buy the Unichip for $841 (Performance Products Price) and gain a max of 15.9BHP. 15.9-18.7%=12.93RWHP That is about $53/BHP or $65/RWHP. This may not be the perfect comparison since these are BHP and RWHP numbers. I am sure Unichip makes the conversion to make the gains look bigger.

For an extra $591.00(Unichip) you only gain 2.89BHP over the FIPK.

The FIPK Sounds pretty good for the money.

I could not get the charts attached correctly so here is a link to the Unichip site where they can be seen.

http://www.unichip.us/vehicle_search.asp

I used the 2004.

After looking at the Numbers for the 4.0/Catback. The Catback may not be all it is cracked up to be. Granted we have no idea what system they used.

I also have contacted a local dyno shop to see how much and if they have any time availible.

One more thing I found very interesting from the Unichip dyno numbers was that the 2004 V-8 and V-6 had similiar max HP and Torque numbers.

Granted these are Unichip provided.

V-8 stock - 244.5BHP Max 291.4 Torque Max.

V-6 stock - 239.8BHP Max 291.0 Torque Max.

This could explain why the 0-60 and quarter mile times are almost identical.

I am sure the 05-06 V-8 would be a different story.

Email received from K&N

This is the email I just received from K&N. I told a white-lie about owning both a V-6 and V-8, but no harm done. 57-9023 is the V-6 kit. 57-9022 is the V-8 kit. It does not tell us a max torque numbers thou.

If you compare to the Unichip chart and add the 14.14ft/lbs torque@3626RPM to the peak value of 291.4@3500rpm according to the Unichip chart it equal 305.81ft/lbs torque for the Stock V-8.

The stock V-6 would be about 272.4ft/lbs@4000rpm + 13.68Ft/lbs @3930 RPM = 286.08Ft/lbs torque. That does not equal the max torque of 291@2000rpm.

Here it is

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in K&N products. We do not have any dyno graphs for these kits at this time. We do have the peak gains though.

57-9023 peaked 13.68Ft/lbs @3930 RPM

57-9022 peaked 14.41Ft/lbs @ 3626RPM.

Thank you,

Subject: FIPK 57-9022 and 57-9023 Torque Numbers

Hello,

On your website you provide a dyno chart with Horse power numbers for all your FIPKs. Is it possible to see a dyno chart for Torque for the 57-9022 and 57-9023 kits. I own both a 2004 V-8 and a V-6 model Toyota 4Runner and am interested in the kits but I would like to see Torque numbers first. Thank you,

Scott Raleigh, NC

Dyno Results

What I find very interesting is the very fat A/F ratio. It starts out lean and mean and then gets fat/rich. This really shows where that smell comes from when we step on it. I'm sure that a lot of that is there for anti-knock purposes when we stand on it. A retuned ECM or the abilty to map your ECM while on the dyno would be great. There is some more power and economy to be found there.
