Went out to the mountains for the night, had a foot of snow fall on us, watched the temp drop by about -10C, with a big cold front just about to hit starting tonight. Vehicle was great, great fire, great conversation, great supper etc. On the way home had a lot of black ice. This is my first SUV in 4 years without dedicated winter tires, love my KO2's however, felt not 100% in control driving back home today. May just buy some winter tires, any recommendations on what works well for a non crossover, truck style SUV. My last 2 were crossovers and I ran Blizzaks on both and felt very sure footed. Have heard good things about Hancook Ipikes as well.

Any feedback is appreciated, and here are a few photos from earlier today. :) Was hoping the KO2's would be great all around tires however today I missed having dedicated winter tires.

Guessing you haven't bothered to search, eh? Probably a top 10 topic.

Guess what I wrote was not sufficient. Where I live we have chinooks, meaning in 10 minutes the weather can change from -30C to +10C or vice versa. Or as leonardo dicaprio would say weather changes due to CLIMATE CHANGE LOL, what a smart kid, good thing so many people think people like him know what they are talking about. So yes I could have easily looked at all the posts about basic winter tires used in Illinios or NY, well I didn't, why you say, well umm they do not apply to me. So how about help a forum member out and if you do not know the answer, then what is the point in saying search for it? Kinda defeats the purpose of joining a forum to exchange information does it not?

Will probably just purchase them again, I guess I was just wondering with a truck type chasis and less electronics than my VW Touraeg TDI Executive, would a specific winter tire work with this one better with Calgary winter conditions compared with what I have used in the past. Being it is a less entuitive 4x4 system, which I actually prefer. Thank you for the response

Ya it's cold

-35c or -31f for our southern friends or fingers fall off when your trying to plug into that little block heater on the front cold and in the dark:canada:
 
For the OP, I've run basic Blizzaks on my little kia for the last 6 years. It's not an SUV, but the traction and extra control they give my Front Wheel drive vehicle has been great.

If I ever went to winter tires on our 4Runner, I would not hesitate to get them.
 
ordered a set of directional winter studded tires will have them here next week, figured I would try studded ones on this vehicle. :)
