got rear ended at slow speed, no visible damage

Hi all,

was at a stop sign, I was inching forward, to see if there was a car coming. saw a car zooming by, so pressed my brakes. the person behind me didn't. He hit my rear hitch. Probably less than 10 mph, since he didn't have much speed.

anything I should be worried about? There seems to be no visible damage, or anything of the sorts. I checked under, nothing bent etc. we are both okay. I got his info. Took a picture of license and insurance. Hes plastic bumper had some ware, and his plate a little bent. but he didn't even get my info, nor did it seem like he wanted it...I asked if he wanted me to follow up with him a few days, but he said, no it was his fault, and he would deal with it himself. thinking about this again, I probably should have had my camera out recording it, so I have a record him admitting guilt.

Probably over thinking... I hear the rear hitch is pretty much Nokia level protection... but still anything I should Look out for? Pics below.

EDIT: All that rust and bumper damage was there before accident. he only hit the metal hitch as shown in pic.

This is why I leave a nice long tow hitch/ball mounted. If someone rear ends me at low speed they're going to get a whole lot of tow hitch and not much of my bumper. Glad you didn't sustain any damage or injuries

Sure your neck is ok? That deep muscle pain can kick in long after the accident. You might want to get checked out.

I agree!! Not to mention the extensive damage and rust that the collision caused to your vehicle.

I just got rear ended few weeks back. Someone pulled out, I had to hit brakes and kid behind me slammed be at a pretty high speed. I was doing maybe 35 when he barely had time to brake.

That being said I thought my truck was done. I get out so mad. I had zero damage. Had it brought in for a check and they said I had about $50 in paint damage on my rear tow hitch.

ALWAYS take information down. I had a friend who this exact same thing happened to, the other guy said everything was cool during the situation, but later we found out he filed a claim saying my buddy had backed into him.
I hope that's not the case with you, but you never know with people these days.

As to damage to your truck....you're fine. I smacked my old tow hitch with the counterweight of a forklift and I checked it out on a friends frame rack and it was good. Hell, it probably helped straighten it.

Neck seems okay now, I didn't even move forward, didn't have to brace myself. Just a loud thump. I will evaluate in the morning, and post back.

Yeah, Despite how bad everything looks, the frame is in still good shape. I went in and checked the a few key weld places(Lower control arm) to see if they came apart, but it seems fine. Going to mechanic very soon, Ill have him do a quick visual.

I'd get your car to an alignment shop to be 100% sure. But this is why I like to keep as much distance, front and back when I drive. you never know if you have to make a studden move, best to have as much distance as possible. never understood tail gators. I follow the same speed as the people speeding, I just do it with at least a few hundred feet in both front and back of me. of course this is not always possible..

Yeah I really wish I made a police report, for this very reason. Yes it takes time, but people pull fraud all the time. I was under the assumption that it would go on the cars record that it was in an accident, but then I thoguht about it, the car doesn't have resell value with the rust. Not that it is a bad car, (120k miles). Now I know it doesn't go to insurance company unless you make a claim.


All in all, I'm glad it was with my 4runner. this is my my daily driver, if it was my 2013 impreza, the damage would have been a lot worse. I am strongly thinking about getting a dash cam for my car now. I wish insurance company gave discounts for those who have them... Record keeping can make things a lot easier...

Truck was at the alignment after the wreck, everything is straight. Shop didnt believe I was rear ended as hard as I was saying. It pretty much totaled the early 2000's Cadillac and it needed towed.

I think this car was in an accident before, similar story, except the other guy was a crack head, and he totaled his car, nothing happened to the 4runner. He was begging my sister not to call the police lol. granted she was probably much younger at the time.

Wow then, I'll stop worrying. glad it got aligned and everything. I'm sure the whiplash was pretty bad though?? Hopefully your okay. I've read Less crumbing = more whiplash.

Same speed... just at a much safer location. When I was little, my dads rear drum locked up, so he did a 180 on the highway, only reason why we didn't get hit was because he always keeps his distance, that is what I learned So that is what I do. Also I always assume someone will cut in front of me/stop etc. scanning 360.

Guess on local roads in the NYC its impossible to follow but I try.

I really appreciate your perspective on what I would call “defensive driving”. If more people would practice what you’re describing, there would be a lot less accidents in the first place.

Top three reasons for accidents last I can recall are; speeding, following too closely and improper lane changes. Just wanted to take a minute and let another like minded driver know that what you’re doing is commendable in my opinion.
