On my way home from work yesterday I saw a Trailblazer SS a couple cars up, so I decided to work my way up through traffic to get behind him. I saw him glance in his rearview and then proceed to gun it a little into the next lane. I decided to follow suit, and the race was on. We each took short little stabs at every gap in traffic, but nothing serious until we both exited the same ramp, a large 2 lane flyover banked with a big sweeping turn. As soon as he exited he jumped into the right lane and floored it, since there were no cars in this lane, I did the same and stayed right behind him.
He slowly pulled away up the ramp, but when we got to the curved section going about 80 he began to turn and at this speed, its a pretty sharp turn, and he LET OFF. His SS looked like it started to lean pretty good. He went over an expansion joint in the bridge and I saw his left side wheels jolt violently with alot of undamped vibration (Why can't chevy get their damping values right?). He let off, but I kept in it feeling the 4Runner approach its traction limits as well. At this point I had caught back up.
The flyover dumps us back onto another freeway, this one with more traffic than the previous. I had a chance to pull up beside him, and he glanced over smiling. Not sure if it was the "I just ass-raped you" smile, or the "Not bad for having 130 less HP" smile. I decided that he wasn't really racing, after all, these things have 400 HP. So I see an opening in traffic and gun it again. I get about 4-5 car lengths ahead until his 6.0L LS2 V8 winds up and begins to rapidly close the gap. I start thinking to myself, damn that thing IS fast. I have to let up because of a car and he ends up getting back in front of me.
We pull up to a stop light where I am behind him and he is behind another car. After the light turns green we pass the first car in the other lane and he pulls out and drops the hammer. I see his rear end drop and can hear this engine. I do the same once I get to the opening, but he is already 3 cars out by this point. I floor it and wind it up to 70 mph, but by this point he's already going about 85-90 and about 6 lengths ahead. I'm sure he was just looking in his rearview watching my car shrink, laughing.
I didn't actually think at anytime during the race that I could beat him. I just wanted to see how the 4Runner would do. I don't get beat by other SUV's often, and trust me there are enough around here to mess with. I just wanted to make him feel he got his money's worth, after all, he does have an additional 1.3L and 130 HP...
