Gotta have the "HUMP"

One could install a color matched plastic lug using waterproof silicone as an option. Was thinking of then plastidipping the rear cap portion and going with a back to the future look of a classic 4Runner. and installing the 3rd brake light inside the cab rear window. All this would be possible for about $400.... (assuming you don't use a rigid SR series 6" led light bar with red lens, probably a lot less...)

as much as I think the spoiler is functionally pointless, I don't have enough time, energy or desire to do any of the above so I'll live with my hump.

Interesting. Wait, are you saying there isn't a factory 3rd brakelight there if you remove that spoiler???

Costs a few years ago to do a mold were much more expensive. Still thousands.

the 3rd brake light is in the humped spoiler...so if you remove the spoiler, there is no 3rd brake light anymore... For those 4Runners with spoilers, the stock hatch has a stamped location for it in the sheetmetal, this is where it would be installed at the factory if the vehicle didn't come with a hump from the factory. If you take off the spoiler and wanted/needed (by law) a 3rd brake light, you'd need to either install an aftermarket one inside the cab to shine through the rear glass or cut your hatch sheetmetal and buy the oem 3rd brake light to install (if you wanted an oem look). make sense?

Mine has a 3rd brake light behind the spoiler (and one in the spoiler). Or at least it's a red lens. I haven't checked if it comes on when I apply the brakes. I doubt it does or I would see red glow coming from that area reflecting off the spoiler.

I have the factory-installed hump spoiler.

Edit: I was mistaken, it's just an indentation in the metal on the rear hatch where the 3rd brake light would be.

your is the only one I've seen or heard of in this configuration then... are you the only owner of the vehicle? If not, how do you know it was installed at the factory? not hatin', just sayin'.... makes no sense cost wise to install two 3rd brake lights as a manufacturer and only make on operational... and rarely do large successful companies make design decisions that aren't cost effective.

I never have liked the look of the spoiler on any of the 4Runners. The only purpose I see for it is maybe preventing rain from getting into car if you have the rear hatch window open??

I agree, I think the spoiler looks silly. I would have it off in an instant if there were no holes left over.

The hump is prone to scratches if you use your roof rack as it is just slightly below the rack line. Use care sliding stuff up from the back.

HUMP for the win. Been in love with mine since day 1. SO glad I went with an 06 and not the 03-05's, too many good upgrades over it.

Nice pics brandoc0mmand0. I think it adds to the bulkiness of the truck, kinda gives is a wider/girthier stance.

I'm assuming that humped spoiler would fit on a 2003 no problem as that tailgate is identical for 03-09. Correct?

Thanks! I agree it adds to the bulkiness and finishes the rear nicely. Yes I believe they are identical in mounting points, only difference is the hump on top.

Ok, so I guess that clears it up. IF you have a factory Toyota spoiler, you don't have a 3rd brake in the sheet metal, but you have a led in the spoiler.

Good news, was able to get a used Toyota hump spoiler for a decent price, well, decent considering a new one is $800 from Toyota, crazy. I hope to have the new spoiler soon if all goes 100%.
