Grease Gun tip question

I tried to grease the drive shaft zerks with my new grease gun, but the tip of the hose would not stay on the zerk and grease was coming out of the sides without being pumped where needed.
The question: are all the gease gun tips standard? Or should I look for a specific size/model to fit tightly on the zerks?

I think they're pretty standard... My tip is adjustable so that I can tighten it to make it hold onto the zerk better, or loosen it so it'll pull off easier. I find there's a happy medium where I can put it on the zerk and take it off without too much effort. Any tighter and it's a big pain in the butt to get it off, and any looser I experience the same situation you're describing.

Nah, they're all the same. You need to keep the tip exactly vertical to the zerk in both directions and you need to use force to hold it in place. Forget using two hands to pump. One hand needs to stay on the tip with a hose type tip. Sometimes the zerk is just effed and needs to be changed out.

This is MUCH easier to do with a pipe tip than a hose tip. Unfortunately, the pipe tip only works if you have a lift available. My pipe one does all the 40 or 50 zerks on my tractor and its implements and it's a pleasure to use compared to the hose one that I only use on the 4Runner.

I have enough trouble with the pipe tip type and as the durk says the hose type are even worse.

I never had trouble using the pipe tip type on my gen 2's but they were a bit higher than my gen 3. I haven't tried it on my gen 3 yet.
 
A grease gun - is a grease gun, heavy duty or regular, does not really matter to me, mine pumps grease ok. It's just the hose coupler gives me problems. If you put the right coupler on the hose it will work. And vise versa - if you put the bad coupler like mine on any gun, it will be a mess.
 
Pistol grip grease gun FTW. No need to have both hands involved pumping the grease.

Better yet is the cordless Lincoln, but not exactly justifiable unless you have equipment with lots of grease zerks requiring regular lubrication.

This. I hated using grease guns with a passion... grease leaking out the sides, never getting it to disengage... generally a horribly unpleasant experience...

I then bought a second grease gun for the Moly grease points, as its easier having one loaded up with each grease type... I got a Draper one and it was a totally different experience to use.

it wasn't even "that" much more.

I now have two draper ones.
 
I do tree work, lots of grease fittings to keep up with. We just picked up one of these:

Works great, except for the fact it is too bulky to get in some tight spots. We just run a few dif gun setups, the straight pipe is definitely nice when you can get away with it.

OP, your fitting may be bound up. Try replacing the zerk, or hit it with one of these:

Yeah, this thing is like $30 plus shipping and taxes. I admit, I bought one cheap gun, it cost me like $16.
But the problem is the coupler, not entire gun. Or the zerks. Like the last post says. I bought my track at 95K in 2011, and yet to grease the shaft. I doubt that the were greased before either, so I might need to replace the zerks I guess...

My mechanic used to grease the DS for free with every oil change but now he's gone & I'm doing the oil changes myself so the zerks haven't been greased since last Oct. I'm just gonna buy the gun I linked for $40. It gets great reviews.

Right. Last time when I asked mechanic to grease DS, he asked me to show him exactly where.... :wow2:
After that, one time, I asked to change the rear diff oil. The did. Over 30K miles ago.Last week I changed it again. Guess what? They put the fill plug w/o magnet on the drain hole, and drain plug with magnet on the fill hole. Both crush rings where on one drain plug... Damn grease monkeys, they just don't care, or don't know. Or both.... So I started doing everything myself. Greasing DS is my next task. I think I will just replace the zerk fittings. Just need to know the size or the part ##. BTW, if someone knows it, please share.

That's crazy, I've been lucky with good mechanics. Unfortunately I don't have one now but I'm doing everything myself with good results. I'm slow & meticulous but I know it's done right.
I have a very old friend who's 40 mins away & is a master tech so if it's something over my head I'm sure he'd send a flatbed over. I also have a neighbor who's a retired bus mechanic with every tool you can think of & he lets me use his garage/driveway when needed.

Jegs just sent me new grease gun...
I only asked a question about the coupler, why doesn't it stay on the zerk. And customer rep replied, they will be sending a new gun to me. It's already arrived. I guess I will give it a try.
Great service they have...
