Was replacing my timing belt (2004 V8) and water pump yesterday when I noticed a greenish "film" on the inside of the water pump (volute and impeller area) and in the thermostat housing. The coolant that I drained was reddish/rusty looking, but not green. If I scrubbed hard, I could start getting the green off. Concern is maybe oil is getting in there, but not sure. Radiator overflow always keeps a good level.
Has anyone seen this before? I expected the area to be clean. If i look back into the line from the block into the water pump I can see some mineral deposits clinging on to the walls. That area is more brownish in coating; expect that to be from a high mineral water flush / addition. My coolant definitely needed to be changed though.
Truck is at 172k miles, I bought it at 145k. Figured on doing the TB+WP early since I don't know full history. TB had been changed as I found but still...
