Greetings and a beaten in the ground question...

Howdy all!

My girlfriend is looking to buy an '02 T4R. I am helping her in the search. Being that I am new to the 4runner world, I'm looking for some info on what to look for in these vehicles (ie. problem areas, important points on the truck, etc...).

I've searched a bit, but haven't come across what I am looking for yet. I am search challenged I suppose.:ybrick:

I drive an 80 series LC, and do all my own maintenance, so I will be responsible for the maintenance/upkeep of her car. I know these trucks, like my LC are super dependable, well built machines.

Any info regarding these trucks is greatly appreciated!

Buy an 00 sport edition, 5 speed, 4wd with elocker, 3.4l v6 w/supercharger. jk

But actually look for:
Timing belt change
3rd member replacement (whining noise from rear axle)
rusted bumpers but an 02 should be fine
after that you should be good.

if you get an automatic be carful. any atf fluid leaking out of the transmission is a bad sign. this indicates the vehicle has had the $hit beaten out of it(hard driving, heavy towing,ect.) chanses are that if the auto tranny dies, other parts are soon to die with it. i had to replace my auto trany in my 02 at 98k- $5,000 parts and labor at the local steelership(thats alot of beer money wasted). if an auto is taken care of(regular atf changes-i do them every 10k, and a tranny coller if you live in a hot area) it will last for well over 200k.


or simplify the isue and get the 5speed witch will last forever.

With all due respect, can you justify your take on 5speed tranny that will last forever, please ? So you were saying if one gets a five speed 4Runner, 4x4, it can literally be driven like what you alluded above ( hard driving, heavy towing, etc... ) and it will hold forever ? If manual transmission were that good, why did Toyota limit its production especially in the late models ( you do not even get a manual tranny on any new 4Runners anymore ) ? I am not trying to be argumentative here, just trying to get educated. Thanks.

Don't forget to look for the leaking rear axle seal. It's not a hard fix, but may be more of a tool that you can use to bargain with seller.

A nice thing with the toyota 4runner is the vin tags on the doors, fenders,panel etc...When gone,open up your eyes for replacement parts, easy clue to a rebuilt 4runner...:fishing:
