Yes and if available, use a low tack tape next time around...better yet just hand-paint the black part.

Perhaps you could try roughing up the chromed plastic a bit with sandpaper or scotchbrite. Otherwise I don't know that anything will stick to it all that long.

Well if it came off that easy it wouldn't of lasted anyways. Try again bro. This time rough it up with some 600 gritt , 800 gritt followed by 1000. Then try a primer . Good luck man.

I think 60->100->150->220->400->600, is what you could try to take the chrome off.

maybe time to buy a black unpainted certifit style grill and just paint that,
i think they are like $50 and come unpainted/black, then all you;d have to do is just mask it off and paint the white and your done, no chrome to worry about.
otherwise, sorry man, that sucks, another few hours of sanding and repainting ahead!
(good idea though, post pics when you get it mounted, i like the 2-tone!)

go to autozone and pick up some adhesive promoter. Its a clear base coat/primer that will help everything stick and last through whatever weather conditions.
If you want the good stuff go to pepboys and buy the bulldog (i think its called) brand. It's a little pricey but bodyshops use it to do jobs like this so that the paint sticks better.
adhesive promoter is awesome! ive used it for my emblems and it gives it a smooth look and hasn't showed any sign of peeling or damage through all the heat from the summer and salt and wet from the winter. jsut follow the directions on the can and im pretty sure you wont have these problmes. Oh i just roughed my chrome emblems up with a brillo pad, it worked great!

To be honest, I've ran out of patience. I go back to college next week so I don't have a whole lot of time either. I'm working on scrapping off the chrome part and throwing a couple layers of black on the emblem right now. I think I'm going to call it good for now even though it looks crappy. Buying a new black grill my be what I do in the future and I'll be using adhesion promoter on every project I do from now on.

You just gotta prep it better man. That chrome is still really shinny under the paint. Mine was chrome until I painted it black as seen below. After I was done sanding it just looked completely dull. It gave no reflection whatsoever. I drove 1000 miles across country after painting it and hardly anything chipped off. Also, how long did you wait before putting that tape on? Paint needs at least 24 hours sitting in 70 degree + temps to cure. So its def possible to paint the chrome. Its all about the prep

totally understandable! i would be frustrated too! as for the scraping if you haven't got it all off and if your having difficulties, there is this stuff called Goof Off that gets all the spray paint off pretty easily and it shouldn't affect the chrome. LOL sorry im recommending all this stuff i should be getting paid from these companies haha, actually just had all kinds of stuff like this happen to me so i guess experience is the best way to learn.
but yeah use that adhesion promoter instead of a primer next time, and it will be solid! if you have any questions about that stuff let me know!

So what do you recommend? I just got done sanding for the last few hours. I used 80 - 100 - 320 - 400 - then 600. I'm hoping that will do it. I'm gonna clean it off and then pick up some more primmer and some adhesive promoter in the morning. Then start painting... I'll share the results when done.
