Grill Fail

It sounds like your on the right track to make everything work out. Just know the promoter dries quick. it says to do light coats every 2 to 3 minutes and only 10 or so minutes to add the color... or primer in your case.

I didn't use a primer but thats cause i wanted the translucent look, but i dont think thats a big deal if you use it, if anything it will probably just make it stronger! the promoter is clear they may have some color stuff but i was thinking you may need to use the primer too so you can get the color you want.

Good luck man im looking forward to seeing this! and just one bit of advise, although i think its been said already, just take your time, give it a day or two for everything to dry inside somewhere warm and you'll be golden!
 
Ok. So here are the final results. After sanding, adhesion promotor, primer, paint, and clear coat, I still got I little paint that pulled up when I took off the masking tape. I think I will sand it and just fill that section in with touch up paint, then wash and add more clear coat. I'll also wait a few days for the paint to cure before putting it back on the truck. Pics to come in a couple days. Here's the process shots. Maybe overkill but what the h.

llol i laughed a couple times but youre persistent and wayyyy more patience than i have. looks good so far. i lold pretty good at that sigh with the flake haha, im laughing with you :reddance:
 
Im guessing your paint peeled because you pulled the tape off before it fully cured? If the paint was cured then the worst you should have seen was a little bit of chipping. The same way your paint chips when a rock hits it. But it shouldnt peel. For that reason I waited 24 hours before pulling the tape off of mine. Also the temp. Its gotta be pretty warm for paint to turn out hard, both during the painting and curing processes. Hopefully yours works out. But if not, I would say try this: Re-sand to get the paint off. If your paint comes off, but the primer is holding strong, then you know the prep work was sufficient. In that case repaint it, being sure that you stay about 10 inches back from the grill, and do light coats. Applying several light coats will ensure the hardest finish possible, as opposed to two or three heavy coats. Make sure its warm enough wherever you paint it. Thats a huge factor. I ran a hair-dryer over the entire thing after every coat I applied. Then do your clear coat. If your primer doesnt stick then obviously you have to re-prep. That or it was too cold when you primed it. I actually used something life 40 grit because anything finer just doest create a coarse enough finish on that chrome layer. The sand paper I used was off of a sending belt. That was the coarsed stuff I could find. I think that had a lot to do with why it has stuck. I tore the chrome up pretty bad. Then you should try some self-etching primer. That might help a ton with the chrome surface. And then do your paint and clear coat. Let is sit a least 24 hours before peeling that tape off. That should give you a really strong finish.
 
It's embarrassing... but I did remove the tape before it had time to cure. I should have known better. I'm learning heaps through this process. Temp is difficult during winter but I got the garage up to 61 degrees which is pretty good being that it's 20 degrees outside. I've got it in front of the fire now for the rest of the night. I think I'm going to do a little patch work on that one section and call her good. If the grill gets really wasted over the next few months, I'll hit it again with the sand paper this summer. But for now I'm happy to say "good enough." I'll more than likely clean it up before I submit a build thread. If I ever do. Thanks everyone for all the tips :trophy:
 
doh!!! thats a bummer you still got that little chip. it looks like the primer is holding pretty good though so your pretty much there!

I know you said that your done and it looks like you got it all figured out but for inofrmational purposes to anyone out there painting in cold temps I use one of these lamps to keep it warm where im painting and it does the job!

but yes IMO letting it cure is key to making it last! I cant wait to see the finished product man!

......But im nervus about the paint sticking to the chrome...

Getting the paint to stick to the chrome is not going to be easy . Unless you coat with something like por15 or something that will realy penatrate the chrome . But I gave it a shot anyways


Or you can try peeling the chrome off, its looks sort of like a metal sticker . But its doesnt look like a easy option.

Best to guarantee to avoid paint flake would be to spend 80$ on a black primerd grill off ebay and paint that .

Good thread. I've actually wanted to do something like this for a long time but haven't bothered. It might be time soon though, I'm pretty over the chrome look.

First to install my supercharger and meth kit though. Then I'll decide on this...
