Grille Fastener Solution

So I'm trying to remove my grille and, despite my 4R's life in the south, the fastners that hold the grille to the hood are rusted. Can't get the 10mm nuts off. Anyone have any experience with a solution? Went to Lowe's, and the Local Toyota dealer, as well as Camelback and Olathe toyota parts. The original fastner is discontinued, and the guy at the dealer searched but pretty much came back with that it looks like I'd have to buy a whole grille. I searched the forum here, and did find a thread but I think the part numbers are for pre 06 grilles.

I'm going to check Fastenal. Can't think of any other solution. TIA!

Im in the same type of situation. My grille is loose and in need to, and in need of new nutz and cant seem to find them anywhere, factory or aftermarket.

Even worse is I can't get very accurate measurements to get replacements since I know at least half of them are going to snap off. If I find suitable replacements at Fastenal I'll report back for sure.
 
Wait... are you guys talking about the little top hat looking nuts on the back? I was doing a satoshi mid a few months back and then realized I needed to stop at Lowe’s real quick. I didn’t think it was a big deal to drive with my grill removed. But I forgot I left all the nuts, a 1/4 ratchet and 10mm socket sitting on top of my bumper. All gone.

Anyway, I picked up 8 new nuts on partznet for 20 bucks shipped. And if you’re looking for the bolt as well, looks like it’s part #2 on the diagram if you type in that part number in partznet. So they should be able to help you out. Also, if they can get it, all Toyota’s should be able to, if your dealers price match that’ll save on the high shipping cost.

So I think youre on to something here. While the parts diagram for my 2008 shows a fastner that looks nothing like what i have, I used an 05 parts diagram, and as you said, part #2 looks to be it. So i'm going to submit an order for new fastners and nuts and we will see if they work.

My grille kind of rattles when I close the hood. Is this the problem that spawne d this discussion? I'm gonna have the front end kind of torn apart soon while I work on a winch mount so that's probably a perfect time to check out the grille issue.

I was trying to remove my grille so I could install my bugflector... easiest job turns into a debacle. Story of my life hahaha.
 
My grille rattles when i shut my hood, go over speed bumps, any bumps for that matter. Just turn the radio up.lol
 
Got the parts from camelback and even though i had to use the information from an 05, these WILL work on 06-09 grilles

9010905092 screw (8 needed for the grille)
9008017202 nut (also need 8)
 
How did you end up getting the old bolts off? I started to attempt to remove mine but they're all seized on. A long day of dremelling seemed like the only solution so I've left it alone for now.
 
Dealer sold me the nuts at 3 bucks a pop last month, had to get them shipped in and it took a couple days.

This was my exact solution but i caution against it. They are a pain in the keester to dremel, and after a few dremel discs and lots of colorful language, I got the grille off but the plastic that once held the fastners in was in most places pretty much ruined and wouldn't or could only barely hold in the new fastners. I got it to fasten back up using 4 mounting points so it wiggles a bit.


Live and learn... sometimes better to walk away while youre ahead with one snapped bolt than to vow to claim victory. :dammit:
 
I'm reviving this thread to ask a question...

Just went to replace my grille. Even after soaking the nuts overnight in Liquid Wrench, they're still frozen and I broke one OEM grille bolt off with nut with a ratchet. Probably how I'll have to get the remaining ones off.

So, given that the new grille has it's own bolts, I'll just need replacement nuts. Went to Camelback and they want 22 bucks in shipping. Not gonna happen if I can replace 'em with something OTC.

The exterior of the OEM acorn nuts are indeed 10mm, with a 14mm outer flange diameter that holds the grille to the hood. The new bolts, like the OEM bolts, look to measure as a 5mm thread diameter.

So, the question is this:

Can I just pick up some OTC flange nuts at the hardware store that have a thread size of 5mm? Of course, they'll need an outer flange diameter greater than 10mm - the size of the hood hole the grille bolt sticks through. But is it that easy, rather than payin' for OEM acorn nuts? If so, has anyone used nylon insert flange nuts for this grille application and how'd they hold?

If you get the chance to wander a bone yard “pick and pull” type, go around the toyotas and remove the fuses, common nuts and bolts, both interior and exterior. For the cost of one nut at the dealer you can get a box full of misc bits.

For what its worth, Ace Hardware, True Value, Tractor supply have a good supply of nuts and bolts and stainless steel fasteners too. If you cant find a flange nut, buy some washers.

Thanks, DrC. Pick-N-Pull's a good idea, when I'm down the mountain in the civilized world 60 miles from here. But with Cyrus the Virus and his maskless human helpers 'round these parts, I'd prefer not to at the moment. My trips to town are only once every 6-8 weeks. Was hopin' to order up some M5 nylocs and fender washers with free delivery - if they've been successfully tried.

Did you ever end up trying the non-oem nuts for the grille? I'm in a similar situation now trying to change my grille and need a solution for new nuts.
