I have a japanese engine that I recently swapped in it is 4 years newer than the car itself. 1990 T4R AND 1994 MOTOR AND TRANNY. I have had alot of troubles with this car but I have always been able to fix them. This problem is not my area of expertise. I have posted elsewhere because I am not getting much help here. Maybe you guy can help me out a bit. Here is the link to most of the existing info.

Post # 24 has the smog results.

So we perform the test the results are as follows: There were 2 tests performed.

smog test

My 95 4 cyl. failed when i first bought it. They put it on the "machine" and said cat. converter bad. Replaced and all is well. I had to retest this past year and failed again. Again cat.converter bad, luckily 5 year warranty so they put it on for free. My No was high and Co was close.

High NO is usually EGR. Check to make sure EGR valve, modulator and VSV aren't clogged. Try the vacuum test on the EGR value and the electrical test on the VSV.

Check timing, although the smog tech should have done this. Too advanced will increase NO.

New cat should usually get you to pass.

Make sure you're well warmed up before the test, cats work a lot better when they're really hot.

Fresh oil can help lower HC.

Of course new plugs, wires, cap and rotor can help.

I read that adding a bottle of gas line anti-freeze to half a tank of gas can help lower NO. It is pure isopropyl alcohol.

My 93 MR2 failed CA smog a few days ago on high NO, so I'm going through all this crap too.

HA sucks doesn't it.... I replaced my cat muffler, just because I was there, O2 sensor plugs, gapped at 31 and he said the egr was ok. So I guess I'll move onto timing and vsv.

Edit: Replaced my aftermarket cat and muffler with a factory cat and muffler and passed smog no problem.
