grrrr... thieving bas****s! insurance totaled my 4r

I was browsing through my old threads - sorry for reviving the dead, but I never posted an update (sorry!).

For anyone that is still interested...... I got paid out $4700 by Progressive and somehow managed to retain FULL coverage on the vehicle. Paid $200 for parts from local parts yard and got her all fixed up myself.

The key was to not back down on the valuation with the insurance (stand your ground!) and the adjuster itemized the repairs out to $4700. Ultimately, they ended up cutting me a check so that I could "get it fixed wherever I wanted" and somehow I was still able to fully insure it.

Nice! This ending made my day!

Did they change the title to salvage? I want to put in a claim for hail damage but was told if it is any thing over $1500 they will total it out and pay me a lumpsum and I would have to re-insure it as a salvaged truck. which I don't know how difficult or what does it cover?
mine is a 2000 sr5 with 390k.

Explain about the hidden kill switch for the fuel pump. How would it be engaged?

Keeping is somewhat secret is half the battle, but I've done it two different ways so far in various cars.

One is a hidden push button switch under the carpet somewhere you like. You just need to know where to push with your hand or foot to turn it on/off. You would never know it’s there unless someone told you.

I have also bought an electrical switch that is key operated… you see these types of switches all the times in elevators, building security gates, but you can install somewhere hidden or convenient and just require two keys… One for fuel pump, and one for ignition. Mine actually uses my house key for convenience, I just toggle it on/off whenever I want to disable the truck.

I don't know how hail damage affects your ability to insure the vehicle, because my situation was different, given that the vehicle did not start or run in it's current state when I filed the claim. Honestly, I'm baffled that they allowed me to keep full coverage on it while also paying me such a large sum, but hey! I guess that's what I get for paying insurance premiums for so many years, without filing any claims.

In Colorado, the state will not require a salvage title to be obtained to a vehicle totaled by hail. Only by pretty much any other means (collision, fire, flood, etc..)
denverunner I don't know how you managed to get by without a salvage title as a total loss from "trespass" falls under that. Got lucky!

I don’t know how it is in other states. But in Louisiana, once they paid out what the vehicle was worth, it then belonged to them. You could however, buy it back at a huge discount. It would have a salvage title though. If it got totaled again, it would only be worth the lower price you paid to get it back...assuming you were still able to get full coverage on it.

If you decided to fix it yourself or by someone else, you still had hope. I forget what the name of the division is that does it, but after it was fixed properly...you could take it to them and have them inspect it. Once they approved/signed off on it, you could then have the “salvage vehicle” title, removed from the title.

thanks for the clarification. I guess it's time to call my insurance agent.

I'm glad it worked out for you! Sounds like they didn't end up totaling your vehicle after all. You would have signed a lot of extra paperwork in order to keep the vehicle if it was actually declared a total loss!
