even with a state cert or license, technically you have to stay one thousand away from a school(per-university), hospitals, and government buildings... thats a federal mandate, not state, so even with the state issued license you arent in the clear. now on the flip side of that coin, it can be almost impossible and most defiantly impractical to go around any school or hospital ect ect ect by a thousand feet, and no cop is gonna bust you for it, unless you are doing something dumb like sitting in the parking lot and refusing to leave when asked or something of the like. just be smart and use a little bit of common sense

An officer would MUCH prefer to see the weapon than not. Honestly, the simple act of keeping your hands on the steering wheel makes a big difference. It shows an officer that you know the common courtesy's and "unspoken" protocol that the majority of civilians don't know, or don't care about.

With that being said it also shows respect, its been awhile since I have been stopped... But I had a habit of removing my keys and sitting them on the roof and already having my paperwork out by the time they made it to the vehicle. A cop asked a friend of mine one time why his pistol was unloaded on the dash and he replied," I did not want to get any trouble." The cop asked," What are you going to do, throw it at someone?"
Also alot of people are going nuts about concealed gun permits. My thoughts on that its better not to have one and get in trouble than have a concealed permit and get trouble. Because with a permit you will face stiffer penalities since you are trained to know all the laws just like having a class A C.D.L. you are a trained driver. People are less likely to mess with you late in the day at the local car wash when you are walking around with a large pistol strapped to your side, just my opinion?

Not quite true.

Original Federal law was held unconstitutional by the S.Court. Congress quickly passed a new one citing the Commerce Clause and it is holding up in lower courts.

In any case, as to the 1000 ft distance requirement, exception is made in the current Federal law for those with a state license. This year Ron Paul authored a bill to rescind the current Federal law. It's going nowhere. INSIGHTS: Ron Paul introduces legislation to repeal Gun Free School Zone Act

Unfortunately the Federal exception only applies in the state you are licensed in as a resident. Out of state, license or not, you could have a Federal problem near school or day care.

40 something states allow their licensed folks within 1000' or schools and such. Yours may not be one of them.

in az if i am going to be parking at a school, it must be unloaded and the ammo separate from the firearm its self. but driving by isn't a problem. common sense goes a long way.

If anyone is still interested, FOBUS holsters has a whole bunch of accessories for mounting their holsters in vehicles or homes or pretty much anywhere.

I think you have to have their "roto holster" for the attachments, but the holster is awesome by itself anyway.
