Guys I'm worried!

Symptoms: when a/c is in it smells like anti freeze
AND
today I was driving her hard and when I pulled up to my house I heard the rad boiling over into the reservoir.

With a small amount of steam around the driver side headlight.


I think my problem is a seized up thermostat (hopefully) and in Texas we really don't have to run them because it never gets cold down here (my dad does is in his muscle cars)

So what should I do guys? Remove thermo and add a little water?


Can anyone recognize the sympotoms??

PLEASE HELP,

Worst case scenario I get a new rad off rockauto (since its the source of the problem with 360k on it)


So please, if anyone can chime in I'd love the help. I'll be taking my moms ford :p tomorrow so I dont make things worse untill she's fixed

Is your rad cap 360K old too? It could be just a bad cap but with that many miles I'd be replacing lots of stuff if it hasn't been before.
 
if you turn the heat on full and there is no hot air coming out, your thermostat is bad, running with out one is totally fine as long as it doesn't get super cold down there.

I'll try this tomorrow. And yeah maybe 5 time a year it's like 40-30 degrees.

So most likely the cap?
 
Are you driving an automatic with 360K? Have you done a trans cooler or something to prevent strawberry shake? 360K is a crazy amount of miles on the original radiator if you do have an auto and no transcooler. Forgive me if you've done all this but you don't have a sig and I don't want to research your build thread if you have one.
 
Thermo would be my second guess since the cap is so easy. Last time I bought one I was at the dealer so I got OEM but really I think the Stant ones at the auto parts stores are pretty much the same.

No sig cause I'm still stock :D haha yeah I've been considering that also and I told my dad about it but his explanation was "if you get mixing of the 2 ****s, that something is ****ed up" essentially it prevents them from mixing BUT you still have a leak. And he's right.

Ok so I'll get a autozone rad cap. Seriously today has been a poop day and then my rig does this (reason I was drivin her hard, aggression) but man thanks guys I was pretty worried. I'll get a new cap, delete the thermo and drop in some fluid.

I'll prob check the fluid to see if we got some mixture of anything or rust.. Hopefully not.
 
360k miles on your truck and its overheating ?

Hope for the t-stat or rad. cap but chances are it is something worse.

good luck though. I would just take it to an independent Toyota shop for an assessment and if necessary a compression test.
 
If you are going to go through the trouble of pulling the thermostat, just replace it with a new one. They are supposed to have them no matter what climate you live in.
 
Could be the radiator. Mine started out by blowing the top rad hose. Then began overheating after replacing hose. New thermostat didn't help but replaced anyways. New radiator and a year later, no problems.

I wouldn't be this much of an alarmist just yet. Swap out the tstat and cap and see what happens. Good chance that this'll fix it but with 360k, any mechanic you take it to is going to find 20 other things to pressure you about. Not worth the hassle unless the tstat isn't the culprit.

What? That makes no sense at all. If you get a leak, you fix a leak. If you get the milkshake, you replace a trans. That's probably the worst advice he could've given you on the subject.
 
I know it could be a lot of different things but its burning or losing coolant and overheating.

Is it throwing any codes?

Check the simple and work your way to the expensive!

If your coolants clean, replace the state and get a pressure and leak down test. Provided your around 14psi and your not losing vacum during the leak down test you should be good. If the waters mixed with any type of other fluid start saving. If it's pink your tranny stinks. If it's brown your head gaskets are down. The later two are a bummer, hope it's just a stuck stat.
