Half Shaft Replacement Question

Hey gang,

So my half shaft boots are busted and I'm unsure if the half shafts have ever been replaced at 160k. I like to know when stuff is replaced so paying for new half shafts isn't an issue for me even if I don't need new ones yet. Its a pretty easy job to do but I wanted to make sure I have everything right before I jump into it.

Two questions. I will be putting in a bilstein 5500 with toytec coils 3in. lift in the next few months. Because of that do I need to ensure I use any specific half shaft or replace anything along with it so I won't have to take them apart again?

Secondly, many people have said to replace the oil seal when replacing half shafts. They are referring to the red circled part in my picture correct?

And I lied, third question. Are there any brands anyone recommends? I have heard a lot of good things about Cardone but very little about other brands. Thanks for the help!

You could go ahead and replace the CV dust seal.

If you're lifting I don't recommend other than OEM for axle replacement other than CVJ (they do OEM rebuilds).

For sure replace the seals that go into the front diff, and plan on the ones that go in the outboard side of the axles. The number the previous member mentioned is correct for the outboard side seals. The seal you circled in red is just one of the seals for the inboard side. I just replaced both mine about a month ago, and the part #s are different for pass and driver side, and each side is installed at different depth in the differential. I will try to remember to look for the old boxes to find correct part #s but I'm betting they've been thrown away, just be forewarned they are different part #s and will require different install depths in the differential. Due diligence on this forum will find you the numbers and depths, as well as all information for the process itself. The really great thing about this whole deal is the axles can be swapped out by just removing two bolts and the axle nuts. No need to undo anything other than the two bolts in the lower ball joint brackets.

Good aftermarket brand is definitely CVJ. Gonna be grabbing a pair with high angle inner boots pretty soon here

Thanks for the link [MENTION=121129]MrSeth[/MENTION]. CV axles swaps are pretty easy IMO but having a nice reference like yours is always a good thing.

After doing some more research, apparently OEM is the only way to go if you have a lift. That's why I love you guys and gals so much for saving my butt all the headache!

So now I have another question. My boots are going but I'm not sure my axles are actually ruined in any way. Not making noise or jerking or leaking or anything. Can I have a CV axle rebuilt prior to it being damaged/worn out? Or should I just reboot and wait for them to go? Brand new OEM cv axles are like $350 a piece. I'm not living that lifestyle yet! Thanks everyone.
