Halogen vs LED bulbs

Dont have HID and dont want to get them being ballasts always break, want to get a nice bright white light, was looking in LED H11 bulbs and they look really nice and brighter then halogen AND supposed to last way longer. anyone have experience with these? its for my limited 2010

XenonDepot is a vendor/sponsor on the forum and they make an excellent product. I have the H11 4300K kit with the upgraded bulb and they work fantastic. 10x better than the stock garbage. If you want super bright white with minimal blue, I would go with the 5000K. 4300K is great, but I think 5000K give you a little more white.

One problem with LED bulbs in our neck of the woods - they don't get hot enough to melt snow/ice off your headlights as you drive.

Make sure you do a proper projector retrofit when you go led/hid - otherwise you're just another dickhead blinding everyone on the road. My $0.02 - mount an auxiliary LED bar and use it only when there's no oncoming traffic.

You have a reflector headlight. NOTHING you put in there will work properly. (ETA: Except maybe a 'better' halogen bulb)

And fyi, the only ballasts that "always break" are the cheap shit ones, just like any other cheap junk product will.

i checked out XenonDepot and they seemed pretty decent, has anyone purchased HID's from them? do they last?? Do they work well in the cold winters?

That's correct. Perhaps you've noticed the absence of premium cars in colder climates? You know; Audi, Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Volvo, Infiniti, Range Rover .... all the ones with HIDs as standard equipment.

Like I said, save yourself the grief and stick with halogen. Oh, and stay out of the Kool-Aid.

man all those vehicles in Minnesota must suck in the winter time, especially in north Dakota.

I see plenty of brand new luxury brands in north Dakota. hell there is even a tesla in town, albeit the only one and there isn't a supercharger in the whole state.

I prefer The retrofit source for lighting upgrades.

I have ordered from both places, both are good and work. But the build quality of the retrofit source's products are leaps and bounds ahead of what xenon depot uses.

This is my opinion. Not knocking xenon depot at all.

I second this. Just installed the same kit this weekend with the Phillips OEM bulbs. Looks awesome. A bit of extra wiring with the relay harnesses but i'll take that over any chance of frying the stock wiring.

that doesnt make sense, therers PLENTY of luxury cars in Canada WITH HID's and they work fine in the winter. Anyway i ordered a pair off ddm tunning, they offer lifetime warranty at an amaazing price and have amazing reviews AND people that have purchased them say they work just fine in freezing temperatures
 
Do they make aftermarket LED projectors now? Because I don't know of any manufacturer that is using a "standard" HID style projector with their LED set-up. The LED Bulbs I have seen while nice, make me wonder how well light dispersion and focus is.

For example, Toyota/Lexus uses a vertically mounted LED pointed upwards at a mirror assembly that reflects into a custom projector housing.

Most of the aftermarket offerings I see do not reflect back into the reflector and/or do so poorly. Keep in mind that LED light is closer to laser light than incandescent in the arrangement of the lightwaves; LEDs provide a much "straighter" path of light than traditional bulbs that sort of wash light everywhere. I was showing some people a while back that you could take an LED flash light (the ones with the projector style lens) and adjust it so you could see the LED board projected onto the wall down to the gaps in the silicon diode where light wasn't emitted. It's one of the reasons I have been hesitant to try new LED bulbs because I just don't see how they're more effective than an HID and factory assemblies are expensive right now.

Typically the Ballasts I see breaking/failing are the generic "box" ones with no cooling fins that come with every eBay special HID kit... I've seen some high quality ones that last a great time, its the heat and poor mounting that kills them typically (besides poor quality that is.)

Do you mean LED headlamps? HIDs get frickin' hot... at least the Prius and other models that have them heat up pretty damn well with HIDs... But then again, that's the housing more than the lens, so you might have a point there.

Ok boys and girls - write this one down, because your ol' pal Hellamatic is about to make an earth-shattering prediction:

I bet within 5 years, Rigid will be releasing OEM replacement headlight assemblies, much like Recon/Spyder/et al. They've already released the DOT-approved series of light bars - I think it's only a matter of time before they cram a DOT-approved fixture into a direct-fit headlight assembly. It just makes sense and fits in well with their business model of producing cool, innovative, and quality products.

You heard it here first......
