Well I completed most of the important tasks in my hapless "build", and my lady and I set off on our trip.
We headed out from the Bay, up over the Sierra on I-80 and then southeast across Nevada through... well basically nowhere, Tonopah ("Queen of the Silver Camps") being the highlight. We camped one night at the base of the Elkhart Cliffs, east of Mt. Carmel Junction, Utah, and west of Kanab. My wife was driving
driving: :beer
, it was very sandy, she was in 4 Low and flooded the engine and just kept revving. The battery completely died.
I got a jump (see picture below), eventually... we were only 1.5 sandy miles back off the road. After several more jumps (all in Kanab, Utah), and a day of working in the parking lot of a Motel 6 in Page, Arizona, learning about the underside of my truck, I managed to replace my alternator.:bravo: Got a new battery while I was at it. Electrical problems solved. :trophy:
We were cruising great across the Rez, but somewhere around Santa Rosa, New Mexico, the engine started heating up. the temperature gauge just ticked up a notch, then another notch. :flame: It never got anywhere near toward the top, but it was noticeably higher than normal. When we got to our hotel here in Clovis, we were running pretty hot.
Under the hood, I had been burning a bit of oil, I guess because of the hot temps, and there was antifreeze kind of all over the place under the hood. It basically appeared to be sprayed in an arc across the torsion bars, oil pan, differential, and crossmembers. not a ton of it, again, but it was there. My coolant level doesn't appear to be low.
When I replaced the alternator, I had to disconnect and reconnect the large hose that comes out of the bottom of the radiator. This does not appear to be a source of a leak- it is relatively dry of antifreeze, as compared to other components of the lower engine compartment.
So- any ideas? :suspicious:
I saw no obvious source of a leak. Maybe the sprayed about coolant was simply from the radiator boiling over, but then... why would the radiator boil over? it's a brand new radiator (~3 weeks). Also I wasn't running at redline temp, so I'm not sure it WAS boiling over. :ybrick:
450 miles left to the wedding in Austin- Will we make it??
