Not a Marine, but my grampa Ray was in the Canadian military and fought in WWII. He never talked about his time over there and my mom always said it was just something you didn't ask him about. I've educated myself a ton on the world wars in the last couple of years, and it would've been interesting to hear some stories. The old bugger passed away in late May this year just shy of his 98th birthday. He had his mind intact right until the end, and had no qualms about admitting outright that he had a good run and just wanted to call it a day, haha. I wasn't particularly close to him, but I'm always thinking of him this time of year and proud of the fact I have a family member that was in WWII.

My Grandfather was a US soldier who also fought in WWII. We were lucky enough to be able to get him to write his story down. This took several years. As he would begin, the nightmares would start. He would stop writing, take a six month break and wait for the nightmares to stop. He would start up and continue to write again.

We have a bound book with photos that we will always treasure. He will turn 93 in February.... still kicking. Four knee surgeries since that war and there is still shrapnel that surfaces from time to time as well.

I'm grateful to be called his family. A truly amazing man.

Semper Fi devil dogs! That's awesome that you have that history to pass on to generations. Many times we don't realize the heroes that are among us.
