Hard shift from 2nd to 3rd

This issue has been going on for a while now. I havent taken it to a mechanic yet but that is my next step if no one has any suggestions. This only happens after the truck has been sitting, not running, for a few hours. I take off shifts to second fine.. then I have to hit 35 mph approx. 2500 rmp before it will shift into 3rd gear. Its a pretty hard shift too. No weird sounds just a thud and I can feel it. Then it shifts through the rest of the gears just fine. Also after it has done this once the rest of the time is smooth and just like normal. Unless it sits for a few hours. I changed tranny fluid but that did not help. Is this a sign my tranny is going out? Or something else.

i have the exact same thing on mine, your not alone!! haha, once the engine is over 131 degrees it shifts fine.... its been like this for like a year now....ive learned that just take it easy till it warms up.....kinda interested to hear what everyone else says though!!

Mine is the same. I think it revs a little higher in 2nd to help warm up the engine, not sure why it shifts hard tho. Mine shifts like that in low range also.

Bad synchro? I had a gear get really hard to shift on my old 22R. Don't remember which one but it was a synchro wearing out and wasn't making good contanct on the gear to get it up to speed.

Thankfully rebuilding a manual transmission is relatively cheap. Replace all synchros, front/rear bearings, thrust bearing and clutch, will drive like new!

^We are talking autoboxes here. How old is the fluid? A series of drain/fills is cheap and could help.

Mine, when cold does the same but no "thud" it may just be going from such a high RPM to suddenly dropping the RPM when it shifts. Mine takes a while to shift when it's cold, I believe that's how our auto trannys are so they can warm up.

Same thing here but no thud. Just revs high, holds there then shifts. After that it is fine. It will only do it once.

My best friend is a mechanic and back when we were in high school he told me to always let my vehicles idle for 15 seconds or longer before moving. Not sure if it truly helps but my last car lived by that and it made it well over 250,000 miles. So many people I see get into their cars, start them and immediately drive away. I was told to wait to let fluids move about and warm the motor.

Me too. I think it's normal, as the car knows it's not warm. My buddy's carolla does it along with most other cars I've driven so something similar.

Sounds like you're far from alone!

Yeah mine more or less does that also, mine of course only first start of the day, and then only the first 2-3 shift of the day, it requires to go up to 35mph to achieve a light throttle shift. On 'cold' days here in central texas (below 40 to me) I let it warm up 5 mins, if i do that, then i have a normal 2-3 shift. I changed my tranny fluid/screen filter 50K ago, no difference. Other shifts are nice and firm but no thud or noises.

Changed your tranny fluid lately?

Sounds like a sticky solenoid valve?
Something is causing the piston to get hung up in the bore until the pressure builds up high enough to to move it, then BANG, it shifts.

Thanks for all the input guys. Good to know that I am not alone in this. I always assumed it just needed to warm up but it just kept doing it and kept doing it so it has started to worry me. I didnt want to make anything worse if it was starting to go out.

When I say it "thuds" I dont mean it is a loud thud. It is just a harder sound than the normal shift and yes I comepletly agree, I am sure its because of the big rpm drop.

How would I troubleshoot this? Is there something I can do to see if that is my problem?
